The solenoid could be on the vapor canister or on the line from the tank. The canister can be in the engine compartment or in front of the tank.

Did you check the block box connected to the vent solenoid? There's a hose that comes off it that appears to run nowhere, that's the fresh air vent. If it's blocked it won't allow air into the system which will set the trouble code. If that's clear, the vent solenoid itself is bad and needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: I've got a 1998 mercury tracer with a check engine

The charcoal canister is usually mounted on the underside of the vehicle in the area of the trunk. It will be a black rectangular box with a few rubber lines and electrical connections going to it. The vent solenoid can be found next to the canister.

A code P1451 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: VPWR circuit open Damaged canister vent solenoid Canister vent solenoid circuit open or shorted to ground, power, etc. Damaged Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Verify canister vent solenoid - To verify normal functioning, monitor the EVAP canister vent solenoid signal PID EVAPCV and the signal voltage (PCM control side). With the valve open, EVAPCV indicates 0% duty cycle and a voltage approximately equal to battery voltage. When the valve is commanded fully closed, EVAPCV indicates 100% duty cycle, and a minimum voltage drop of 4 volts is normal. Output test mode may be used to switch output on/off to verify function. Code p1451

Code P1451 is a EVAP control system canister vent solenoid circuit malfunction. If you're lucky it's just a bad gas cap but chances are the solenoid is bad or the wires leading to it are damaged or broken (more likely). Check the attached diagram for the canister location and have a look. If it's just damaged wires you can soldier a new wire splice in place and shrink tube it for protection. Make sure it's not going to rub against any metal that will damage it again. ec8c492f-73cf-4d32-ad19-4b1ac9f652f5.gif
