Replace spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter then recharge your battery and try to start it again.

First place I'd look is the mass air flow sensor: remove and clean with a Qtip and carb cleaner. Its a bit delicate so be nice to it. After that, check idle air control to see if it's working properly. Of course, change filters (that's proper maintenence that should be done even when working properly) If after doing this stuff you still have a problem, get a manual and even if you can't access codes, there are specific tests you can do using a decent volt/ohmeter.
I think you got me going in the wrong direction with the trans thing. So, if it's shifting properly while going down the road, leave it alone for now.
