No,not "into"red, but close to it. if it goes to red,you might have a failing thermostat. let me xplain. -a failing thermostat will either make your motor run too hot,or too cold,(the temp you see on your dash is for the motor)
NOW,you also have a temp sensor for the radiator fan, which is on the radiator.
SO,if the motor thermostat isnt opening, the rad' isnt getting the hot water(to cool off),in turn, the fan will come on later!!(hotter)
in conclusion,replace the engine thermostat,(it's cheap$$)

I have a 1996 chevy lumina and the temperature gauge keeps moving around unpredictably. The fans wont come on. We checked the fuses and relay switch. Could it be the fan motor, or temperature gauge

The gauge is supposed to move. Between 190 and 210 degrees. About a 1/16 to 1/4 inch movement with the needle. If it goes from middle(200 degrees) to hot(260 degrees) and back. Check the coolant level. Air pocket in the engine. Low fans come on at about 210 degrees. High fans come on at 225 degrees. High fans come on when the A/C is turned on. And it works.

At witch point on my temperature gauge should the radiator fan turn on cause right now the needle on the gauge goes almost to the red when fan switches on The car is a 98 Ford contour gl

The fan should turn on at no more than the width of the needle past normal. It should be running just about all the time after normal operating temperature is reached.

I have a 2006 Cadillac DTS my temperature gauge goes up and down but the car never overheats. When the needle is in the red the car putters but when the needle fall it rides smooth again

Actually, by your very description of the symptoms the car IS overheating. The temperature gauge should NEVER be "in the red" as this is too hot for the engine. The "puttering" you describe is the engine laboring to stay running in the overheated condition. This is shortening engine life dramatically. It sounds like you may have a thermostat that is not opening completely, or a cooling fan that is not operating correctly. If a fan problem it could be either the fan motor itself or the coolant temperature sensor that turns the fan on. It is imperative that you get this looked at IMMEDIATELY. The engine on your Cadillac has aluminum heads and they are easily warped or cracked by heat. A third problem you could have is a low coolant level. Never trust the sensors in the overflow bottles. If the coolant in the reservoir gets depleted, then the system develops air pockets which cause overheating and erratic gauge operation. If this is your problem, topping off the reservoir and purging the air in the system should clear things up. Be advised, however, you should also be on the lookout for system leaks if this occurs.

Ford focus 2003 temperature gauge jumps to red

Check the operation of your thermostat.
Check that the radiator is filled with fluid and that there are no bubbles in the system (this should only be as a result of a radiator re-fill).
Check that the radiator fan comes on as the gauge needle moves over half way and into the red.

when the fan kicks in, how long does it stay on? if longer than 30 secs, have radiator cleaned or replace. During testing, turn off the airconditioner. Time the fan when it comes on and off. should be less than 1 minute.

My fans are not coming on when do they suppose to come on

The radiator fans should come on before the engine temperature reaches the 3/4 mark on the temperature gauge. If the needle goes anywhere near the red your fans are not working and you need firstly to look at the thermostat, and then the fan relay.

4.0 litre ford motor not using any water but overheating not using oil either

I believe you have electric cooling fans which are part of your cooling system . First , remove your radiator cap and allow the engine to warm up to operating temperature . The cooling gauge needle must be close to half way. You want to make sure the thermostat is open . Slowly raise the RPM to about 1500 while watching the coolant . You should see movement of the coolant indicating the thermostat is in fact opening . Once you verify that is OK , the Nextstep is to verify that your cooling fans turn on . Put the radiator cap back on and continue to hold the engine RPM at about 1500 . As the needle on the gauge moves to the center or a little bit higher , the cooling fans should start up . If the needle continues to climb towards the red zone but the fans don't come on , your problem will be in the cooling fan circuit . I suggest having a professional diagnosis be done .
