It's possible the pistons "screw" back in, even though they don't look like they are threaded.
Very much like X-1/9 calipers.

remove caliper, push disc all way home, put wheel nut on to hold home, retry fitting them the disc may be slightly scued. If no go try diffrent brand of pad I had same prob with a diffrent car last week & diffrent brand pad was 2mm thiner. If can't exchange pads get piece of emery paper on flat surface & sand away top part of pad material in round motions both ways till they fit. :-)
To your direct question - I don't know the Highlander model in detail, but as a general response, if the brakes are noisy when NOT applied, the piston in your new caliper may not be returning properly.
The return spring in disc brakes is actually the rubber fitted around the caliper piston. If this is causing the piston to be wrongly positioned, the brakes will be noisy. Check that the rotor can be turned by hand when the brakes are not applied. Also check that the piston is not retracting from the pads a very long way, which it should not do.
It is worth making very sure the spring clips are fitted correctly. Some can be easily put in the wrong way round.
If the brakes are squealing when applied, that is a different problem. You can get a disc brake anti squeal liquid, which is applied to the back of the pad on assembly to the caliper. Also double check all the anti squeal shims are correctly installed.

front brake pads replacement you need only usually wrench set, inclusive 7 mm allen key also. But for rear brake pads replacement you need obligatory a special caliper piston pressing tool, in order to press back rear caliper piston with parking brake automatic adjustment!!! For front brake pads. You should buy the brake pads (with wear sensor). For change front brake pads you must raise vehicle, remove wheels, extract the retaining spring of the caliper, and remove the caliper as follow: 1. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper, and do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose! 2. Remove top and bottom caps (on back side of the caliper) for access to guide pins, then unbolt and remove them from the brake carrier. Remove the caliper. 3. Now you must thoroughly clean the brake calipers (free of grease). 4. Remove outer brake pad from brake carrier. 5. Pull inner brake pad out of brake caliper piston. 6. Check up the brake fluid level on the reservor, and emptying if neccessary! 7. Push piston back into brake caliper housing. 8. Install inner brake pad (with expanding spring) in brake caliper piston. (Arrow marked on pad - if exist, must point in direction of brake disc rotation when vehicle is moving forward). 9. Install outer brake pad into brake carrier. 10. Bolt brake caliper housing to brake carrier using two guide pins. Tightening torque is 25 Nm. 11. Install both caps. 12. Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing. Important: Depress the brake pedal firmly several times while the car is stationary so that the brake pads adjust to their normal operating positions!!! Check brake fluid level and top up if neccessary!!!
not hard at all.remove tires.then remove 2 screws either 12mm or 14mm that hold the brake caliper in place.remove caliper but DO NOT disconnect the brake line from the caliper.get a C-CLAMP in order to get the caliper piston pushed back in.remove old brake pads and install new ones in the same order as the old ones were removed.you will want to check the rotors to make sure they are in good condition before you install the new pads,then put caliper back on and tighten screws to specs.do the same on the other side and always remember to PUMP YOUR BRAKE PEDAL A FEW TIMES IN ORDER FOR THE CALIPER PISTONS TO ENGAGE ON THE NEW PADS. hope this info helps.good luck and take care, manny
You can sometime just pull it off but sometimes you will need to take a screwdriver and push the brake pad back on the caliber piston side. This will force the piston back and allow you to remove the caliber. After you remove it you will need to compress the caliber piston fully back in order to allow room the install the new pads and get them back on the rotor. Sometimes you can fully compress it while the caliber is still installed. On some vehicles like Honda you need a special tool in order to compress the caliber. Most auto parts stores will lend you the tool if you buy the pads from them. Be sure and loosen the master cylinder fill cap to allow the brake fluid to expand in the master cylinder. Clean everything off with spray brake cleaner before installing the new pads and clean the new pads throughly. Be sure and install pads in pairs. Do both front wheels or both back wheels not just one.
One, take your brake fluid reservoir cap off.
Two, use a thin piece of wood to help you compress the piston on the caliper....do it slow. This way, you don't create a lot of pressure to the reservoir and it won't overflow.
Three, these are the steps to removing and replacing the pads for the rear. It does mention a special tool....but you can use a c-clamp for the same purpose:
Check the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
If required, remove the fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full.
CAUTION Care must be taken when servicing rear brake components without disconnecting the parking brake cable from the brake caliper lever.
Remove the disc brake caliper. Support the caliper with mechanic's wire.
CAUTION When the brake pads are separated from the brake caliper, new brake pads must be installed. The brake pads are one-time use only.
Remove and discard the brake pads and spring clips from the brake caliper anchor plate.
NOTE: Do not remove the anchor plate guide pins. The guide pins are press fit to the brake caliper anchor plate. If the guide pins are damaged a new anchor plate must be installed.
Inspect the brake caliper anchor plate assembly.
Check the guide pins and boots for binding or damage.
Install a new brake caliper anchor plate if it is worn or damaged.
To Install: NOTE: The left caliper piston turns clockwise and the right caliper piston turns counterclockwise.
Using the special tool, turn and compress the brake caliper piston into the cylinder.
Clean the residual adhesive from the brake caliper fingers and pistons using the specified brake parts cleaner.
CAUTION Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the brake pad or caliper mating surface. Do not install contaminated pads. NOTE: Install all the new hardware supplied with brake pad kit.
Install the new spring clips and brake pads.
Position the brake caliper and install the 2 bolts. Tighten caliper bolts to 23 ft-lbs (31 Nm).
If necessary, fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with clean brake fluid.
With the engine running, apply pressure on the brake pedal to seat the brake pads.
If they are drum brakes, make sure you turn the self adjustment screw all the way closed. If they are disc brakes you need to use a brake tool to screw the calliper piston in. Just loosen the bleeder valve and screw the piston in counter clockwise.
