Here is another possible cause-
My case, 1996 Deville"theft system problem-car may not restart".
Wasn't the key(did resistor trick)
Had spark
Starter working but no start
Square boxes around all Shift letters flashing
3 times 10 minute reset had no effect.
Car stopped running while traveling down the street-stone cold dead.

Yes, I know I should have checked this first; but I didn't!

Found blown 10 Amp PCM fuse-replaced and all is well. IDIOT!
Hope this helps someone else...

Bill

Found the same problem. couldn't read the key, so i found the circ. that reads the signal (orange wire/has 2 whites in it) and installed a resistor from radio shack inline. message went away and problem has not returned.

I had the same prob. i read in the book that came with the car to wipe the key off and try again... such a simple answer, but it worked for me. I always use the trial and error method, lol

Nathan_ehasz, can you help with the location of the wire and what rating the resistor was that you used?

This might work for most:

Theft Module Re-learn Procedure without a T5O or T6O
During this procedure, the vehicle battery must maintain a minimum of 10.5 volts. If the battery is not fully charged or is weak, a battery charger may be connected.
NOTE The battery charger must NOT be set in 12 volt boost. This will prevent this procedure from working.
1. Cycle the ignition switch to the "Run" position.
2. Wait a minimum of 10 minutes, cycle the ignition switch to the "Off" position.
3. Cycle the ignition switch to the "Run" position.
4. Wait a minimum of 10 minutes, cycle the ignition switch to the "Off" position.
5. Cycle the ignition switch to the "Run" position.
6. Wait a minimum of 10 minutes, cycle the ignition switch to the "Off" position.
7. Verify the repair.

and if not try this:

STARTING DISABLED/DUE TO THEFT SYSTEM/REMOVE IGNITION KEY"
If the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) does not receive the Fuel Enable message it will use the class 2 serial data line (CKT 1807) to tell the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) to display the "STARTING DISABLED/DUE TO THEFT SYSTEM/REMOVE IGNITION KEY" message on the Driver Information Center (DIC) . This will inform the driver of why the engine is not starting. When the ignition is turned "OFF", the IPC will start a timer and display messages to inform the driver to wait for the PASS-Key II timer to run out. The messages will read "WAIT 3 MINUTES", "WAIT 2 MINUTES" (after 1 minutes has passed), "WAIT 1 MINUTE", and "START CAR".
If the timer was not run out, the IPC will not send the Fuel Enable message. When the PCM does not receive the Fuel Enable message, it will command the IPC to re-start the message process.
This message is most likely caused by an improper key resistor value or the IPC did not properly sense the ignition key resistance.
good luck!

Its your engine to chassis ground I had same problem replace wire or try sanding paint around connection for better connection. The wire is located on top left of engine, very visible

you can reset the system by turning key to on position for 5-10 mins and then try starting it but its probably a short or grounding prob try the engine to chassis ground

SOURCE: Turn off security light on my 1992 cadillac deville

I had that same problem and it took me forever to figure out what was wrong. You are probably using an aftermarket key as was I. The stupid little plastic/metal chip in the shaft of the key is for the security system. Sometimes if you insert the key and turn too fast it sets off the security system. To solve the problem go get another key made from a different key maker, they cost around $15-20. Or, insert the key slowly and turn the ignition slowly. Or go get a good key from the dealer, I've heard it may be ~$50 for this key but it should work the best. FYI I still just use my aftermarket key and just deal with the occasional no start wait 3 min ordeal. Good luck.

SOURCE: '97 Cadllac Deville Concours reading "Anti Theft System Problem"

make sure your key is clean try again, if not the system will tell you to wait 3 mins while key is in ignition this will reset the system and dash will tell you to start vehicle, you should be fine after that, common cause dirty key!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem on my '96 cadillac seville. You need a new ignition cylinder lock (what your key goes into) because there is a wire inside of there that is broken that reads the chip on your key. Your key should be fine if this is true, the faulty ignition switch just isn't reading it.

The anti theft only keeps the car from starting, not moving. Make sure the brake lights work, check fuses.

How do u disable a 94 cadillac deville anti theft system

U can bypass it (called the VATS system) but not fully disable it, what is done mimics the key code to fool the VATS module into sending a OK to start signal to the fuel injection computer (called the ECM). go to the web link below for instructions on the bypass.

1996 cadillac DeVille. How to install Turn Signal Switch

You have to pull the air bags, and steering wheel, and disassemble the anti theft plate in the column. This task may be better left to a shop, it is fairly difficult if you know what you are doing, and nearly impossible without the requried pullers....

Starting disabled due to anti-theft system

Almost always the key is not at fault. I know for sure heat changes the resistance of the key but it does not happen as a usual thing you would have to apply physical heat. Contact me at albmahone@yahoo.com

the anti-theft system is tied into main computer system, try disconnecting the neg battery terminal for about five minutes. if that doesnt work then it will have to be reset by the dealer
