Question about 1997 Volvo 850

1 Answer

I have a volvo 850 '97 -- Last Thursday my son lost the gas cap off the gas tank and never said anything about it. On Friday I was going to the mall and right at the highway the car shuts off completely, I tried to restarted back again but nothing I had to call for a tow truck and because of the snow and melting ice, water went inside the gas tank. I was told that I needed to replace the fuel pump is this true. The car finaly starts, but when I put it in gear it turns off back again. What do I need to do?

Hi, I could start the car and tried to go over a gas station on Sunday, but on my way I had to take a stop, right at that stop sign the car shut down completely, but the thing is that when it did I had no power I had to jump started it can like tried to startup but we ended up pushing it back home, hopefully we were not that far from the house, but still it didn't want to start and lost all king of power, you could hear the motor going but that was it I had almost a 1/2 tank of gas on the car I'm thinking it might possibly be the fuel pump, but before I never had any problems with this car. Do you have any ideas what it should be?thanks very mucho

How much water do you think got into the tank? If the fuel door was closed it could not have been much. You need to have the tank drained to get all the water out, and then add a fuel dryer liquid to get any residual moisture out. After you son has done all of this, it should run fine and you should not have to replace the pump.

P0455 evap control system gross leak detected on 1998 volvo s70

The code means the computer tried to vent the gas tank and found a huge leak in the vent system. Issue could be a faulty gas cap, leaking gasket on the gas tank, or broken line from the tank to the vapor canister.

What is the P0440 trouble code on a 97 850 volvo non turbo

Code is for the evap system which vents gas fumes from the tank.
Could be anything from a bad gas cap to a leak in the vent system.

1978 monte carlo would not start until i blowed air back toward gas tank.. starts but wont stay cranked,,,,run rough and wont idle,,then shuts off. changed sparkplugs and wires..took off distributor and...

Sounds like vapor lock in the gas tank. I would try replacing the gas cap before doing anything else.

Sometimes the only solution is the easiest and last thing you try.

Today my car wouldn't start. Last Friday it didn't start and we replaced the battery. It started all weekend but did the same thing this morning as it did last Friday. It cranks, sounds like it's getting...

the crank shaft sensor is more likely to cause a no start . you can replace it your self for a lot less and the sensor is most likely less than $100.00. you would need to give the year , make , model, engine to get instructions.

2001 Chevrolet Astro has service engine soon light

You have to have the code pulled to see what it is. This MAY help but you should also have the fuel pressure checked to see if you have a blockage usually when a pump goes out the vehicle won't start or may just idle.GOOD LUCK

My son filled up by 2001 volvo with a tank full of

Drain the fuel asap. Race fuel is not meant for a everyday car it will ruin the engine since its not set up to run on that type of fuel, its probably kicking a code to you engine due to this to make it run this way. If you drain the tank and then fill it with normal 87,89,91 octane gas you should be ok. Not too sure on how to drain the tank on that year Volvo.

Check engine keeps coming on, i dont see anything wrong with engine, but i have a locked gas cap and the last time i put gas in and sealed it back up the next morning the check engine light was gone

The fuel tank and lines is a pressurized system that is monitored by the computer and will set a emission code if there is a leak or you fill your tank with the vehicle running.

1993 Volvo 850 wont start...help?!

It sounds like your fuel pump is having a problem with getting the last of the fuel from your tank. The pump also has a strainer on it. The unfortunate reality with the 1993 Volvo 850 is that the pump and strainer are located inside of your gas tank. You can look for kinks or pinched areas in the line but from your description it sounds like the pump is going. It has to work much harder when the fuel is low in the tank.
