Question about 1998 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

Speedometer has incorrect mileage

Fifty four years ago I began customizing a 1949 Mercury Convertible.
Sectioned four inches
installed 55 buick quarter panels
installed 1940 model chev convert top
1949 Ford hood for a deck lid
The car sst through the years due to military srevice, new job, marriage
recently our '98 signature town car was wrecked
decided to put the town car chassis and running gear under the Mercury body
NowI have a "new" vehicle and want to start the mileage at zero
QUESTION...........HOW CAN I TURN THE MILEAGE TO ZERO?

U can't reset the mileage, there is no way to do this because the movement is electronic, u can buy a new speedo, but that is very expensive.

Let me rephrase this. My 1990 buick century custom has an incorrect wiring diagram in the haynes manual.it will not start the way the book shows. It has no distributor. It has ignition coils.

I quit using haynes and chilton about 12 years ago. At home I buy from alldatadiy.com. Yeah, it's short term(only a year or so), but it suits me and spot on for the car I work on. Except stereo and amps. No one gets this right.

Beside 225/50/16 what other size can fit a 2002 Mercury Cougar

Your best choice is to use the DiscountTire.com website and use the optional tools available. You can enter your vehicle and the site can be made to do alternate tire sizes.

There are some choices on the left side of the home screen and you can even find out the true road speed versus speedometer readings if you use an optional tire upgrade.

Now there are several ways to change things. Width and sidewall profile both contribute to Revolutions per mile. My Mercury car came with 60 Series tires, changing to a 65 Series of the same width gave me a 5% boost in fuel mileage with a corresponding speedometer error.

You do have some limits, wheel rim width will not work on extreme tire changes. Different width wheels would be needed. You have to consider clearance issues between the tire and frame of the car on turns. Both the inside edges of the tire must clear the frame.

The total tire height reflects 1/2 the distance change below and 1/2 the change above the wheel rim. So ride height would change and wheel opening clearance would change.

You have many choices of tire size. In sidewalls, they make 55, 60, and 65 Series tires. In width, 225,235,245 and P metric. Use the Discount Tire site, maybe the Tirerack site and work with the numbers.

Go to a Tire shop and have then pull a 50 Series, 55 Series, and 60 Series.tire in the same width. You will be able to see for yourself what the numbers mean.

I would feel comfortable saying an upgrade to a 55 Series would be no problem. You should have a Label on the doorjam to show tire sizes and inflation rates.

Please rate my info.

Will 235/75/r15 tires look ok with a 2 or 3 inch lift?

Were you not planning on increasing the tire size after lifting it? They may look a little small with a 3" lift, its a personal preference. If it was me, I would probably go to a larger tire like 285/75R15 or even 305/75R15. Also remember if you put a bigger tire on this thing the speedometer will be off. It will say your going 55 but you may be going 60. Also bigger tires will change the overall gear ratio. It will increase gas mileage but lower the torque to the wheels.
