WHY CAN'T I SHIFT MY 1997 GRAND MARQUIS OUT OF PARK AND INTO ANY GEAR?

WENT TO CHURCH THIS EVENING, AND UPON OUR LEAVING WASN'T ABLE TO SHIFT CAR OUT OF PARK AND INTO REVERSE OR ANY THING. SHUT CAR OFF, RESTARTED AND TRIED AGAIN. MADE SURE TO PUT FOOT ON BRAKE, STILL NOTHING. AFTER SHUTTING OFF CAR, OUR MINISTER SUGGESTED PUTTING IN KEY AND TURNING IGNITION BUT NOT STARTING AND THEN SHIRT, WHICH WORKED. WE DROVE HOME, PARKED CAR IN DRIVE-WAY AND SHUT IT OFF. TURNED CAR BACK ON, AND SAME THING ALL OVER AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME NO MATTER WHAT I DID, ITS STUCK IN PARK. PLEASE HELP. THANKS.

You may have a faulty Break-light switch. If the switch is bad, then it will behave as if you have no breaks afa the shift-lever is concerned.

Your owner manual will tell you how to bypass in emergency.
Check your fuse first. fuse panel on instrument panel.

Please rate as fixed if this helps.

Fuse 23 - 1 5 amp
Fuse 34 - 7 1/2 amp

check enigne light not related.

The selector lever lock can be moved mechanically out of position ”P" when for example the battery is disconnected or completely discharged.
Using a ball point pen or similar item as an unlocking lever, push forward and hold in position.

Move the selector lever out of position "P".

NOTE: If the selector lever is moved back to ”P" it is re-locked.

SOURCE: car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

2001 grand marquis, have to slam the gear shift lever into park to turn the car over

Price the repair. Ford does have some Credit programs for car repairs and you might be surprised about the terms. Their own Credit card can be used for oil changes and tires as well as brakes and so forth.

Your problem is not only with starting but can result in the car lurching or rolling if not properly repaired.

My PRNDL don't work, loose shift indicator won't go into gear. Plenty of transmission fluid, no obvious wear or breakage, what do I do now?

When you turn the key to the ON position are there any instrument lights on the dash? Does the radio work? If not, dead battery.

They had a lot of problems with the pressure sensors. I would replace the whole tail shaft because they had problems with them. You don't have to remove the trans to remove the shaft. Get one from the junk yard. Hope this helps leave comment.
