My 1999 GMC 1999 Jimmy isn't switching gears correctly
I can drive fast but cannot switch to third gear. My RPM's are revving up to the 2000 mark and I sense some hesitation. Do I need a rebuilt tranny, or is it possibly something way less expensive that could be wrong?

My first guess would be a faulty neutral safety switch which also acts as the switch for the reverse lights.
I think the switch is mounted on the transmission where the shifter rod extends out. You should be able to unplug the switch and see if the lights go off.
Change the switch itself if it drives normal then randomally kicks into 4 lo/4 hi i had the same problem and a transmission shop told me it was the vaccum and the transfer case but one of my mechanic friends told me that it was my switch and shops only tell you other things for the money. Try changing the switch.
Lets take this piece by piece.
The 4x4 switch is defective.
A driveline vibration regardless of engine speed is usually a shaft or cv joint. To verify a visual inspection is necessary.
The poor acceleration in any gear is the begining of torque converter problems( stator or pump). As long as ATF level is correct.
I recommend having a transmission repair shop look this over and preform a pressure test of the main line of the transmission.(it may not be necessary if the condition of ATF is burnt). Good luck
If you're only in "D", you should switch to "OD" when driving at higher speeds. "D" only allows you to move up to third gear whereas "OD" will move you into fourth. You're over-working your transmission by driving in "D".
Well the check engine light ios probably on. The transmission is trying to start out in 3rd gear. You may have lost the neutral safety switch. These switches do not act like the old ones. They are mounted on the side of the 4l60E transmission. Try this first. Purchase a new neutral safety switch from GM (only). Have it installed and then clear the codes. Your tach and speedo should work and the trans should also work again. Hope this helps.
You will need to go to a trans shop and get it fixed.
I highly recommend AAMCO since they warranty their work. They will have to "unbend" the bracket or readjust the cable play, or repair the linkage that places the car in the proper gear according to your indicator on steering column or dash.
Not a big deal...but then again you could have crushed the synchro gears, but i truly doubt it!
