Audi A4 1998 DIY service steps/manual


I have a Audi A4 1.8 1998 model. It currently has 137000km, it missed the 130000km service at Audi. I would like to do the service myself.

I need to have a manual/instructions on how to do this. Please help.

    Thanks a mil for your input! I didnt even know that the timing belt needs to be replaced with 130k km service!

    The Audidiy and audiworld websites are blocked here at work! I will definitely check it out when I get home later. Im not much of a mechanic at all. I used to service my Honda Civic vtec, stuff like spark plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter. Other than that, other things I thought were better off being done by professionals!

    Thanks again for your info, should I decide to tackle this service by myself and need assistance, I KNOW WHERE TO GET IT!

Go to or (look in their Tech area), and there are full procedures on how to do it (it's the timing belt service). It's not a difficult job really, but you may need to get some specialty tools such as Torx bits to do the job.

Make sure that you get G12 coolant from VW/Audi (the pink kind) and if you have some other color in there now, flush it fully before adding the G12. You can order everything you need, including coolant, from (I've used them many times with full satisfaction). Don't waste your money on the advertised cam locking tool - it's very expensive and wholly unnecessary. Its intent is to keep the cams from spinning, but if you position the #3 cylinder (rear passenger side) to top-dead-center on its compression stroke, the cams would have to be hit with a hammer to turn them.

The job is not difficult really. I've done many timing belts on many cars before, so I know what I'm doing overall, but the first time I did an Audi 2.8L V6, it took me a total of 5.5 hours start to finish. Many other cars (like my 300ZX) take that long just to reach the timing belt. As for how these kinds of jobs go, this is a very easy one.

mean, it means bad spark, from Ign.coil 1, (2 cyl wasted spark)

i have the full JK, FSM. factory service manual, go it day 2.
the first thing to do, when doing DIY , is to open the hood
and see what engine you have, as diff, engines have diffr, EFI systems.
mine has the Trenton 3.8L V6. with MAP and TBW system.
TBW is throttle by wire. (map sensor is for speed density system)

P= powertrain
2= jeep private code, not USA fed, spec EPA codes.
3= Fuel and Air Metering (Injector Circuit)
02= Ignition Coil 1 Secondary Circuit- Insufficient Ionization

this car has a coil pack and is WASTED SPARK
3 coils 6 spark plugs. wasted. (google what that means)
but is important to know because either spark plug can disturb
the current path here.

if my 6v did this, id do the 102k mile service. with NGK parts,.
or Bosch.

we , usually you get P03xx codes with it. misfire.

i open my fsm ,there are 6 tests. for this 1 failure
it says the spark duration is too short or nothing at all.
ill not type out all 6 tests nor the logic, ( has it)
step 1 is to :
clear all DTC
and key on (no start)
scan it, do you get 2302? now, not running,
that is correct the ecu test coil primary , before running, amazing,
if yes, the next steps are to see if the coil is bad (open primary)
or the ASD drive is dead.

Get a repair manual for a step-by-step process. Haynes or Chilton manuals cost about $25. at parts stores. Libraries have good repair reference materials. Alldata/DIY has an online repair service ($26.95 subscription cost for 1 year, 1 vehicle) that is excellent-more diagnostics and troubleshooting flow-charts than a repair manual.

Pretty long and involved procedure for a not too difficult job.
I wouldn't attempt it myself, without a repair manual for guidance.
A Haynes manual for your car would be my choice. Some prefer Chilton's. They cost about $25. at parts stores.Any repair manual would have a step-by-step directions for transaxle removal. Libraries also have good reference materials on car repairs.
Alldata/DIY has an excellent on-line repair service with very detailed guidance and procedure and troubleshooting-the whole 9 yards. Cost for a 1 year subscription is 26.95 for one car, with discounts for 2 or more vehicles. It's like having the factory service manual with an expert over your shoulder giving tips and advice for the DIY'er.

How do I reset the radio in an Audi tt 2004? The indicator light says "SAFE"


The radio is in safe mode and requires the security code to reactivate it. First check through your service documentation for a credit card sized card that Audi print the code on.

If this is missing the only other way to retrieve the code is

1) Remove the stereo from the dash and retrieve the serial number stamped on the back of the stereo.

2) Contact your Audi dealer with both the serial number and the chassis (VIN no) of your car. You will find the VIN no on your registration document.

3) If you do it this way and have retrieved both of these numbers yourself your Audi dealer will run the numbers and give you the code free of charge.

Hint: Some dealers will attempt to charge for this service but they are not authorized to so. On the original safe code card from Audi it specifically states that if you lose the code your Audi dealer will supply this free of charge. Please ensure to quote this information to the dealer if they attempt to make any service charge.

In my 1998 VW golf i lost use of 1st. 2nd. and 5th gear. at the 130000km mark. i think its a linkage problem, is this easy to fix/ cheap to fix?shifter just slides around when in 3rd or 4th as if in...

yes. you have to check the plastic/rubber moulding at the linkages under the hood. maybe one of them is missing (fallen out because of wear)
