No backup lights. Bulbs are all fine, fuses also.

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport, automatic transmission with 4.0 liter engine. I have no back up lights. All other lights are fine. I have checked the bulbs and the fuses all are fine. Now what?

I would pull for a rebuild. sounds like the torque converter is stressed due to some gear ratios that are out of whack. this will require a total rebuild if possible.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Additionally check the reverse switch and its wiring/connectors. The reverse switch is located at the transmission. This is also part of the neutral start switch assembly. This page would give you additional insight.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Pls be informed that due to my current rank and rating, even a Helpful wouldbe detrimental to my status. Should this solution not address yourconcern, it would be appreciated if you could just not rate it at all. Cheers.

1996 SPORT JEEP

Hi LINDA101162,

Confirm you have an automatic transmission (sorry to have to ask).

It depends on the type of transmission you have.

AW-4 - Yes
Not AW-4 - No

It's pretty easy to check though. Get a flashlight.
  • Look under the vehicle at the transmission. You're looking for an I.D. tag just above the pan. You only need to find it, not read it. No need to go underneath.
  • Look from both sides.
  • If you find the tag on the right (passenger) side, It's an AW-4 (OK to use)
  • If you find it on the left or don't find one, then it's not an AW-4 (Not OK to use)
If you have any other questions, click the ASK button.
