Gauges misreading bigtime

My speedometer will say that i am going 110 when i am MAYBE going 35-40, my temp gauge reads about 300 and my rpm gauge says i am always going about 6000rpm. it kind of suddenly started doing this, but all three gauges didnt decide to read wrong at the same time. first was the speedometer, then the temp gauge, then the rpm gauge. but now they all read wrong. they just didnt start together. Help !?!?

I have the same problem. It happens when I'm driving in a lot of rain or melted snow (wet roads) or when it gets hot or when I drive a long distance. Can anyone give an idea of what is causing this and/or what it would cost to correct?

I'm having the same problem with my 2003 cavalier! A couple weeks ago, the temp gauge was way passed the red 260 mark and into the speedometer gauge area - scared that my car was overheating we added antifreeze and the gauge actually went back to normal. Then yesterday, I was driving to work and looked at my speedometer and it said I was going 80mph in a 40 zone! However, my speedometer was stuck at 20 and my temp gauge was AGAIN way passed the red! I rushed home to check my car. It didn't feel hot at all and we checked the oil - to see if there was any water in it - but there wasn't! Please help! If the gauges are broken does anyone know about how much it would cost to fix? Also, is it safe to drive the car when I don't know if it really is overheating or not?

my temp guage is laying on top of my speedometer needle! now i don't know how fast i'm going or if my car is over heating. Oh and i ran out of gas yesterday because that didn't work either

Started with the temp, then spedometer, fuel guage, ammeter, tachometer, and now oil pressure. Kinda worked its way from left to right over the last year. At first they wouldn't zero when you started the car, but would settle in the right position if you switched the ignition on and off several times. Now most of the guages are at the 6:30 position and dont move in response to ignition or startup checks. Seemed worse during the winter. Gonna try pulling the battery cable this weekend (suggested by a mech at work) and letting everything get a complete reboot when reattach it. Btw mine is a 2004 Monte Carlo

I found a temp fix for my 2004 monte carlo,is to try 1 of 3 things to rest rpm gauge that reads more than actual speed. (1) turn key on and off. (2) pull the fuse for instrument panel. (3) disconnect the battery for awhile. I don't know what is causing this problem.

There should be an instrument panel fuse in the fuse box located inside the car. Check the fuse and replace in needed.

I hit a bump and all dash went out speedometer gas rpm temp but boost gauge still works. what could that be?

Sounds like it could be a grounding issue. Check for loose wiring that is bolted directly to the frame, body, or firewall components. Is the light on your boost gauge working? Or is your gauge just reading vacuum/boost without the light?

Ok i have a 1999 camaro and the gas speedometer and rpm gauge go up and only the gas and speedometer go back down. all my other gauges are fine

Need a new cluster. There may be a recall not sure but you can have cluster fixed by replaceing the step up motor in cluster.

The speedometer scensor connects to the transmission, try following the cable comming from it to see if it has been damaged. idk about the rpm gauge though.

I would ask the Pontiac mechanic and see what he recommend. They wont charge you nothing for that. If you don't get the right answer go to another garage and ask them.

Go to the fuse box and change the fuse for "Gauges". I think this might solve the problem.

Instrument gauge misreading

I don't know which gauge,or how you know it's not reading correctly, but the way i would determine a gauge's accuracy is with a scan tool that will read the data stream in your vehicle's computer(s).For example, suspected malfunctioning coolant temperature gauge,go into engine data and look at the coolant temp reading that the PCM (powertrain control module) is actually seeing from the sensor, and compare that value with what the gauge is reading.
