Remove valve covers, remove rocker arms and push rods, remove intake manifold, remove lifters, (special lifter tool may be required). Reverse steps to reassemble. Make sure to use new gaskets.

Is the engine oil level low? If not you probably have noisy/worn lifters.

Noisy lifters

more than likely you will need new lifters but i have gotten away with substituting 1 quart of atf for one quart of oil on an oil change that seems to work good and make sure you don't use any thick oil treatments and are running 5w30w oil..

79 pontiac firebird with fuel leek.

If it is leaking fuel there are most likely 2 issues, one check the float level, 2, the air horn is warped or the body of the carb is warped, done 100's and these are the only issues I have ever seen.
