Question about 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Truck

2 Answers

When I turn the key to crank my Dodge Ram 2500, nothing happens.

My truck was not giving me any problems cranking until one morning I went to start the truck. I turned on the key to heat the engine, it is a disel, but when the wait to start light went out and I turned the key it made a clicking sound for about 2 seconds and then total silence. My first though was a dead or weak battery, so I tried to jump start but their was still nothing when I turned the key. To check the starter I was told to use a jump wire from the large connection to the small connection and if starter was good then it should then trun over, which it did. I then tired to start the truck again but still there was total silence when I turnned the key. I then replaced the batteries with a new one and the other was fully charged. After installing them I tried to start the truck again, but when the wait to start light went out I turned the key and again nothing happened and there was still total silence. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM AND HOW DO I FIX IT.

make sure you have power to the small terminal of the starter when cranking. did you try to start it in neutral?

did you have the block heater plugged in? what was the outside temp the night before or that morning? If it was a very cold night and you didn't have the block heater plugged in , it could be that the engine itself is too cold to crank. try plugging in the block heater for a couple hours and see what happens. also check your ignition fuse. it may have blown while trying to start it in the cold weather.

Your starter solenoid is out. may have even blown a fuse under the hood in the fuse box in front of the driver. i believe it is a 30 amp.

Is this a manual or automatic tranny? I would be looking at the gearshift selector, did you try starting it in neutral, as opposed to park, if it's an auto, and how about a switch on the clutch pedal to prevent starting in gear, if it's a manual? How about wiring to the neutral safety start switch? Any fuses, circuit breakers been checked? What year truck?
I'm just throwing things out there, just to check before you spend any more money that you don't have to.
I could use a battery, right now- got an extra one?
:-)

Good luck and keep us posted.

You need to take it in and have it scanned for fault codes, that is the first step in repair of this problem.

I have the same issue on a 94 B250 - replaced ECM, cam and crank sensors - still only coil primary with initial relay cycle, then nothing during crank. Was told ECM needs signal from cam and crank to send primary to coil. Very confusing - all wires connected.

You have not run a OBD2 electronic engione control fault code test, get a code reader and do that first and don't replace anymore parts until that is done and you have the fault codes and have done the proper diagnostics for each code.

Trying to start 2001 dodge ram pu it cranks but will turn over

Stop cranking! It Sounds like you're nnot getting any fuel. No fuel + cranking equals a burnt out injection pump. Start by checking your lift pump pressure. This can be done at the fuel filter by removing one of the small test ports and hooking up a pressure guage. With the guage installed, bump the engine over which will cause the liftpump to kick on and run, giving you a reading. A good pump will read 10-12 psi. a bad one will read in the 3-5 range. Good Luck!

Engine won't start

Yes, I understand that it does not start. I just want to make sure that I understand correctly. There are 2 things that can happen when you turn the key. Nothing at all, or the engine will make noise but not actually run. I am trying to find out which of the 2 is happening.

Wont start just cranks over

is it possible that there may be a glow plug problem and the cylinders are not getting the proper temperature requirements thus causing the problem with having to use either your glow plugs may not be cycling properly (this is just an old school guess) good luck write back with feed back

No spark

Sounds like a bad ignition switch It when the switch is in crank mode it should supply power to the run position as well but if gets worn the contact will not spread power across
