In normal driving engine fault light abnormal light. Diagnosis diagnosis with BMW ICOM.Check exhaust pipe, air inlet pipe; check the sealing of the coking problem, is most likely to damage caused by oxygen sensor.Advised a change of oxygen sensor.
The check engine light is because all check engine light codes are caused by components that affect emissions. It's not actually an engine problem, it's a problem with either your O2 sensor, MAF sensor, fuel/air ratio, pyrometer, or exhaust. ------------ BMW OPS diagnose and programming tool
According to my research and the BMW master mechanic, basically your oxygen sensor is getting an abnormal reading. The abnormal reading will result in the sensor being unable to adapt beyond its +/- 10% threshold to adapt for the fuel/trim mixture. Therefore, either your car is going to run too lean (not enough fuel) or too rich (too much fuel).
Problems:
1) Either your pre-cats oxygen sensors are bad. 2) Fuel pressure regulator 3) Leak in the air intake /vacuum system I would think that it is probably your oxygen sensors. Replace that and you should be good to go. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!
The check engine light could be any number of things and the only way to find out is have the codes scanned. The brake light issue is common on E46 3 series. It is an issue were the brown ground wire that goes into the lamp housing melts at the connector causing a loose ground connection. The connector needs to be replaced and also add additional grounding wires to prevent further issues. And for fuel additives either use the cheveron techron, or the bmw fuel additive(the bmw stuff is the exact same thing, so just use which ever is cheaper).
contact BMW help desk tech office pick there brains. do it yourself if you can. or pay someone. I not got BMW but thats what I do start at the top work down. ask expert and they make um. liz

I've always found having the manual for any car is my first priority when buying a new horse for the stable; they always pay you back.
check the brake light switch on the pedal first, if thats ok, check the tail lights again, where the bulb holders twist into the panel on the circut board connectors normally deterioate. cheers mike.
