Sounds like the same issue going on here, but when you flood an engine as described below, would there not be a smell of gasoline???

Had it worked on at Firestone... and your right... it was costly. FINAL COST $479.00

I had a friend who is a mechanic tell me to replace the spark plugs, engine could be flooded. Auto Zone and O'Rileys quoted me $24.00 per plug.... Firestone charged me $69.00 per plug!! They replaced the spark plugs (4 different types-- 2 Leading and 2 Trailing - as indicated on the plugs by a small letter on the spark plug L and T). And replaced the oil on the car.... Walmart put in 10w-30 and this car only takes a basic synthetic oil (as labled on the oil cap 1.5 or something like that). It ran for a month since the oil change but the ride was rough... accerlaration was delayed, steering wheel shooke allot and it felt like I was having transmission issues.

Another really helpful insight was this car "Should not be started with the gas pedal) it has a 5 sec delay... so dont press the pedal when you crank it! This was the source of my problem... I flooded the plugs and burnt them out.

And another final note.... this car uses oil in a different manner than other cars. Check your oil at least once every 2 weeks... once a week if you drive allot. The oil level will go down and you have to replace it... this is not an issues-- or a bad thing, this car just uses the oil in a different way....

I love my Mazda RX-8, just needs special attentention....

I have a 2004 that had the same problem. It sounds like the engine might be flooded. The best thing to do is to remove the fuse to the fuel pump. It will be listed under the fuse cover under the hood. Mine was a 20 amp but check to be sure. With the fuse removed, crank the engine for a minute to remove any fuel flooding the engine. Replace the fuse and crank the engine in 10 second intervals without touching the gas or you will reflood the engine. This process can sometimes take awhile and will drain your battery, so have it connected to an additional power source ( i.e. another car battery or jump box). When the car finally cranks over there will be a huge cloud of smoke so don't be alarmed when it happens. Lastly some words to the wise. This process CAN ruin your starter, but is essentially the same process that the dealership will you except that they will remove the spark plugs to drain the fuel and then charge you for new ones. If this process doesn't work then you probably need new spark plugs which is going to cost quite a bit. I was quoted upwards of $525 to fix this problem until I talked to a Mazda mechanic and found out how to do this myself. Just make sure that the engine is up to running temperature before turning the car off and you shouldn't encounter this problem again. I hope this helps you, and remember that if all else fails the dealer can fix it. It won't be cheap, but they will get it done.

I almost forgot, you HAVE to get the oil changed as soon as possible because there is probably gas in the oil now.

Glad you got your car running. I can definately relate to the cost of the spark plugs. Did they mention to you that you are supposed to change the plugs about every 15 to 20 thousand miles. I love my car as well. You sort of have to if you are willing to keep buying oil, spark plugs, and premium gas. One thing I did notice on your reply, and I hope for your sake that it was a typo, is that you used synthetic oil. I hate to say it, but Mazda used cheap parts inside of the Renesis engine and the chemicals in synthetic oil will cause them to break down. While it's not recommended, you can use 10W-30 oil, and you will probably get better gas mileage from it, but never use a synthetic. Keep on enjoying that 8!

Actually you can leave the fuse in. You floor the gas and crank the ign for ten second. Then crank it for ten with foot off pedal and this "unfloods it"

Security light is on and the key can turn the iginition on however the engine wont turn over. Is there a way to reset the security so the car can start and be driven to a repair shop.

disconect the possitive wire on your battery, reconect then try to start the car three times....on the third try leave the key in the on possition for 20 to 30 minutes then start it up. engine will run ruffly and want to stall just keep giving it gas lightly and drive it to shop.

2004 mazda wont start, blew a front tire and had to be put on rollback. Sat all nite, and now wont start. will crank and can smell fuel.

flooded engine common problem remove all plugs and fuel pump fuse. get fuel out of engine do not istall fuel pump fuse re install all plugs I suggest a good charger be used as system can kill batt very quick run to wires from fuel pump fuse into seating area start cranking the engine over wires not touching once compression sounds alright touch wires to geather (may have to repeat these deflooding wire touching procedure many times) once started do not turn off car till normal operating temp . Once hot turn car off remove wires and re install fuel pump fuse .With RX-8 u cannot just start and stop car right away as in washing car as it can produce this same condition ALWAYS let car warm up before turning off.

Will not start after changing battery changed battery on my 2005 rx 8 mazda last night and it started up fine. this morning just kept turning over and would not start.

If the engine is cranking, it can only be 2 things left, got gas? Are you getting a spark at the plug wire? Check the oil. Some cars won't turn on the fuel pump with no oil, could be the pump. Could be the coils. You have to check these things out and find out which way to go next.
