2007 lincoln MKX - the gearshift stays locked in park. cause?
The gearshift will lock without any apparent reason. We tried pressing on brake then shifting, tried opening and closing doors in order. Left the vehicle, locked it,then opened it again. sometimes it unlocks, but no rhyme or reason why. lately it's been happening more often.

Manufacturers have designed the shifters to lock in the Park position. This is to prevent children from accidentally moving the shifter out of Park if they are playing behind the wheel (as they should not be of course). The ignition must be in the ON position, with the brake pedal pressed, to release the shifter from PARK. If there is a malfunction, most cars have a bypass release button hidden near the shifter. Check your owners manual for details if needed.
Check the fuse for the shift-lock mechanism. Also check the brake pedal sensor - do the tail lights come on when you press the pedal? If you need to get the car out of park, pop open the cover and press the shift-lock override button located near the base of the gearshift lever on the console.
The 2007 Lincoln MKX is definitely towable "4 down". According to the owners manual: The ignition switch needs to be in the accessory position (position 2 of the 4 possible positions) so that the steering wheel is able to turn to let the front wheels track the towing vehicle. The transmission needs to be in "N" so that the engine's disconnected. The parking brake needs to be off, and the engine should be run for 5 minutes before starting out and "at fuel stops". This makes the vehicle a good vehicle to tow along with you behind your motorhome. The folks at Blue Ox make an excellent tow "baseplate" that is practically invisible yet hooks up easily to the motorhome. The BX2192 package is made specifically for the '07 to '10 MKX. It works beautifully with my '07!
It could be the selenoid lock it self , which is located at he front of the Selector.
You might need to remove the selector and test it if it is working properly. As it should be working for safety reasons
THIS IS CAUSED BY EITHER A SHORTED BRAKE LIGHT CIRCUIT WITH A RESULTING BLOWN FUSE, OR MORE LIKELY A DEFECTIVE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, THE SYSTEM HAS WHAT IS CALLED A PART LOCK OUT, THIS SYSTEM HAS TO SENSE THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED BEFORE U CAN SHIFT OUT OF PARK, IT DOES THIS BY USING THE 12 VOLT SIGNAL FROM THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO RELEASE A SMALL SOLENOID ON THE TOP OF THE STEERING COLUMN.
