I have a 2004 dogde ram pick-up 3.9 auto.Yesterday trans shifting very hard between first & second, light or heavy throttle.Truck has 30,000 miles and bought used, don't believe ever serviced. Will purchase filter kit & atf+4.Anything i should look for?All answers appreciated.
Check fluid level first. See if fluid smells "burnt". The signs are the tranny is dying. Don't go far in this vehicle until you've taken it to a shop you trust. They will pull the drain pan and inspect. Next sign of death will be a whining in the transmission as the suction strainer for the pump becomes clogged with the clutch material. Good Luck.

it may not be a transmission problem. have you checked for fault codes to make sure it is not in limp mode? limp mode keeps vehicle from accelerating properly because the ECM has put the system at a limited setting to keep the engine running but not to its full potential.
I had a 1999 Dodge Ram Pick Up that did the same thing, I couldn't figure out what was wrong and it sat for 3 months, then we figured out that it had a ignition fuse blown, might be a long shot but hey it might just be the problem too...good luck
1999 dodge 1500 5.2 will not shift to second once the engine reaches normal temperture or I shift from drive to nutural and back to drive then it will work fine untill the next time I stop. filter, fluid, shift slenoid, governor sensor have been replaced.
possible speed sensor at rear of transmission, does engine rpm sound higher then narmal, and is your trans shifting as it should,if these problems are also present replace the speedometer sensor at rear of trans,$50 to 60 bucks
this could be seveal things ,if it is running now and no more problems you my have had a vaper lock in the fuel line ,as for the rear seal thseal is around 20.00 bucks but this is a fairly labor intensive job
I have a 1999 Ram B 1500 Van, auto transmission, 5.9 L engine.
Same problem, trans hesitates in 2-3 upshift, sometimes 1-2
to 2-3 upshift. Posts trouble code P1756 - Transmission Govenor pressure too low at below 15 to 20 Psi. Transmission pump shot or valve body leak stops trans from reaching proper pressure to shift, which is minimum 15 Psi.
Either trans is leaking in valve body, valve is stuck, shift solenoid on valve body is sticking, or pump is shot.
