Engine occasionally acts if it is missing out during slow acceleration. What could this possibly be?

There and may factors that cause a missing during accerating. Is the air filter clean? Has the car been tuned up? are the spark plugs clean? Has the gas filter been changed? Let me know if I can be of further help.

I have a 1998 Mercury Topaz that starts to miss under acceleration and can hardly make 100k per hour. Ignition system is ok. The problem seems to be in the fuel system. New fuel filter installed and...

Even tho the ignition seems ok, I'd check the ignition cables to the plugs. Sometimes these break down over time... it will idle and drive ok, but when you need power for a hill, or acceration, that's when the wires faults start to show up.
A quick test is to put the car in drive with your left foot on the brake FIRMLY while you press the accerator... if the miss and lack of power shows up, it's usually the ignition cables to the plugs.

98 lincoln cont. idle speeds up in park...sometimes keeps climbing to around 2500 rpm...sometimes idle is normal though. If in drive and idle is climbing, can drive without using the accelerator!

I had the same problem. I changed the throttle position sensor (TPS). I haven't had any trouble since I replaced mine about three months ago.

it could be your tensioner. it sounds like a clicky squeak. sometimes it may go away but it always comes back. thats what mine is but i havent fixed it yet. i doubt you can grease it, you probably need it replaced. not expensive, at least the part should be under 100 bucks
