Rover 400 battery

I have a rover 400. After leaving it standing over night I need to jump start it. Having had this problem for a week I changed the battery. This didnt solve it. I have checked the output of the alternator it is 13.8V, when jump started the car works first time so I assume the starter motor is ok. When I come to start the car, the initial warning lights are very dim ( oil, brakes and battery )
What could cause the battery to lose its charge so quickly?
Thanks.

Thanks. I solved the problem. It turns out the alternator was burnt out. low voltage ouput and not providing enough current to charge the battery. The burn out also provided a resistance short for the battery to drain through whilst not blowing any fuses.

Oh well at least it is fixed.

    Thanks.

NOTORIOUS// replace the ignition switch and you'll be fine. switch is still live when you take your key out. there's a short from the switch to the battery.

Do you have an aftermarket radio/cd installed? if so try taking the face plate off overnight.

Possibly your engine management computer will need to be reset. If the battery was dead dead, meaning the voltage was down to under 11 volts or so, there is a good chance the computer lost the information it needs to manage the basic engine functions such as throttle settings, fuel management, etc. You might want to also pose this question in one of the Land Rover forums to see if anyone else has a solution, but I would guess it's service time.

The 2 most obvious things that jump out to me are a fuel filter, and the fuel pump. By running out of gas you may have damaged the fuel pump, as it is with all pumps, when they go dry, they can/will burn up.

Battery keeps going dead.

obviously there is an abnormal drain on the vehicles electrical system. Examples of this are a glove box or conso;e light staying even though you closed it, is there a reading or compartment light on ? Anybody that just says "you need a battery without ALSO testing the electrical system for integrity is not helping,

hi, it may be that either your battery is faulty, have it drop tested, or if that is ok your starter motor may be faulty drawing to much current, ie, it needs a recon, hope this helps
