Question about 1988 Chevrolet Suburban

1 Answer

I'm having a possible short to ground problem in my 88 chevy suburban. Not sure if that is the total problem tho. What happens is I turn the key to ACC and the radio lights up. Headlights work, interior lights work. No power locks, radio cannot be turned on. Then I move it to "on" position, and no radio, no dash lights, still no power locks, but still have headlights and dome lights. Try to crank, and nothing works besides the headlights and dome. Battery has strong 12 volts upon inspection with DVOM. Sometimes I can get it to crank over and run. I try putting on wipers or hazards, and the truck dies like it's an open short to ground. I replaced the ignition switch, and That did'nt solve the problem. Does this sound like a problem with the neutral safety switch or the ignition module in the distributor? or are those symptoms not typical for those to be bad... i'm just trying to figure out where I should look before I start ripping out wires and testing one by one, or even worse yet... paying 200 bucks for a new wiring harness when I dont need too....

You have to determine whether there is no fuel supply or no spark supply. Disconnect one plug wire and ground it to the engine and crank the vehicle. There should be a visible spark and snapping heard. If spark ok check fuel pressure on the fuel rail with a guage. Should be 55-60lbs.

My 2004 Chevy suburban "battery not charging" indicator light keeps coming on. AAA just put in a new battery

If the battery isn`t the problem, make sure that the drive belts ate properly tightened.

If they are, check and clean the cables and terminals that connect to the battery. When looking at the cables, look GOOD. The cable may be corroded inside the insulation.

Also check the engine ground and make sure the alternator is also well grounded. Be sure to check the red output wire is not shorting.

Be sure that the red positive cable is not shorting. You may aven we interested in removing the alternator and having it checked for internal problems.

My chevy 88 surburban wont start after battery change and it is draning the battery

Someone will have to check the wiring and fuses to look for a short to ground. A mechanic would check the starter for voltage and work back to the key switch.
TBI stands for throttle body injection.

1995 chrysler radio with cassette just stops working will come once in awhile

Check ALL fuses. Check the wires on the back of the unit, especially ground and "key on" wire. It may be an Intermittant shorting of the units ground wire, which would cause the unit to totally shut off and on whenever the short happens. Shouldn't be a hot power wire shorting, because it would have blown the fuse and wouldn't work at all. There is a 12v signal wire that tells the unit when your key is in the on position or the acc. position. The "key on" wire. That wire may be causing the unit to turn itself off and on if it is getting an improper signal. it may also be a problem with the cassette player itself.

Have a 2002 chevy suburban, liftgate window will not open

Sounds like you have a wiring problem to your liftgate. Check the wires where they come out of the body, and go into the liftgate. If they are good, check fuses, or possibly a module.

Although there is no guarantee, the most likely issue if there are NO other electrical types of 'gremlins' is that over time (both of my /88 Suburbans have over 300K miles on them, so that's a LOT of wiper activations!) the rotation of the wiper shaft has rubbed the insulation off of one or more of the wires in the harness to the point where rotating the arm creates a ground and kills the ignition. You might get lucky and be able to fix it yourself if you're comfortable with the idea of tearing the column down, or you might be money ahead to bite the bullet and take it to a GOOD auto electrical shop, but if you have to go that route, take the time just for giggles and disconnect the wiper motor itself and see if it still happens. If it does continue, you know it's not the motor grounding, but unfortunately if it doesn't you can't be sure if it's the motor unless you place another motor in the circuit (including the ground to the chassis) in it's place.

1988 5.7 TBI Nightmare This is the start of what the problem was and is, I had a RV cam installed when the engine was rebuilt a year ago. the cam was not a computer friendly cam so after a round with the rebuilder and discovering the specs weren't the correct ones for the cam I installed a 3702 edelbrock cam and lifters with a 7800 timing chain and gear set after I had tried two chips from Jet and no improved performance and the 3rd chip was to be for the cam and that is what is in the ECU now and I have tried about 5 different BCC chips and the bottom line is the power is there but something is happening its hit and miss the idle will sometimes lope, is stalled when first started and acts as if its starving for fuel or its bogged with to much fuel. the fuel pressure is 10 - 13 psi and I have R/R the TPS, IAC, ESC and knocks device , EGR and Solenoid, MAP, Temp sensor, and the Dist is a Procomp 10001 with a MSD-5526 coil. the Throttle Body was rebuild and the ECM was replaced with a Rebuilt ECM. it will smell rich etc. but with the things that goes on it does not show any codes?? I have no clue just feel stupid this is been a simple thing that is kicking my **** and now its a challenge but still loosing the fight too far in and too much spent to stop,. LOL Help !!!! The BCC is a california vehicle AFBX, 5.7TBI TH400 A/T P.S. the key can be turned of and back on as the engine not dying and seems to correct the power and run problems but will not last goes back to running bad or with problems. ?
