How to replace high low dimmer switch for head lights on 2004

I need some help on how to replace the high lower dimmer switch for the headlights on a 2004 Buick LaSabre.

    Need to replace a lower ball joint on a 2008 Buick LaCrosse sedan. I have a bumppy ride and believe that the ball joint might be bad.

This will involve removal of your steering wheel and a couple of special tools, a steering wheel puller and a steering wheel lock ring compressor. If you have these are can rig your on, remove ground and wait ten minutes so the airbag system capacitor has time to discharge. Remove drivers air bag and detach wiring, remove steering wheel nut and notice align marks on wheel and steering wheel shaft and remember them. Remove the steering lockring retainer after compressing spring. from there you should remove Blinker stick, by turning shaft to line up to slot on hole and pull out, Remove clock spring and then switch, reverse to install. Why don't lights work?


Both the headlight switch and the BCM provide a ground, or control circuit, to the headlight relay coil circuit for manual or automatic headlamp operation. When you place the headlamp switch in the OFF position, and the ambient light sensor indicates low light conditions, the BCM energizes the headlamp relay for low beam operation. You may switch the headlights to high beam by pulling the dimmer switch handle toward you until the dimmer switch is activated. When the dimmer switch is placed in the HIGH position, the indicator lamp input to the BCM is pulled low. The BCM then sends a class 2 message to the instrument cluster in order to illuminate the high beam indicator lamp.

1988 GMC Van headlights cut off when I tilt steering wheel.


You need to check the wires in the steering column. Take the column cover off, probably phillips-head screws, so you can see the wires. Somewhere the tilting function is putting pressure on the wires to the dimmer switch. It may be pulling loose a connection, just a fraction, to lose contact. You may also need a new dimmer switch. Or a multifunction switch if the dimmer switch is attached that way. The headlight switch is on the dash, isn't it? If it is, the headlight switch is not the problem, it is the wires in the steering column or the dimmer switch. If the dimmer switch fails, you will have no high or low beams, no head lights at all.

I have a 2002 dodge grand caravan the headlights. One works on dim and the other works on bright. I've replaced both headlights and it did not fix it. What do I do next?


Sounds like a wiring problem. You may need a repair book to track it all down. Could be a ground connection too.
The headlight switch sends power to the dimmer, then thru the body control module, then the high and low beam relays, then the four fuses, then the actual headlights. So you should have power on the low or high beam fuses depending on which way the dimmer switch is positioned.

You can't turn them on manually with the switch . You have the switch set on auto ?
Headlamps
You can use the headlamps in two different ways.
• Place the headlamp switch in the ON position for normal operation.
• Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position for automatic lamp control (ALC). During ALC the high beam headlamps are On at reduced intensity for daytime running lamp (DRL) operation in daylight conditions, or low beam headlamps On in low light conditions.
The DRL/EXT LTS fuse and the EXT lamps fuse in the underhood junction block supply battery positive voltage at all times to both of low beam lamps and to the right high beam lamp. The low beam circuit continues to the high/low beam switch, then, depending on the position of the dimmer switch, connects to the normally-open headlamp relay switch contacts. Placing the headlamp switch in the HEAD position provides a ground path for the headlamp switch input of the Body Control Module (BCM). After receiving this input, the BCM energizes the headlamp relay. When the headlamp relay is energized, the low beam circuit is connected to ground G201. The high beam circuit is divided into a left and a right side circuit.
The DRL/EXT LTS fuse in the underhood ignition block supplies battery positive voltage to both the coil and to the normally-closed contact of the DRL relay switch circuit. During high beam operation, the left side current flow is through the closed contacts of the DRL relay, and to the left high beam lamp.
The EXT Lamps fuse in the top of the engine fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to the right high beam lamp. Both high beam circuits are then connected together, and continue to the dimmer switch. When the driver closes the high beam contacts of the dimmer switch, the circuit is grounded at G201.
Both the headlight switch and the BCM provide a ground, or control circuit, to the headlight relay coil circuit for manual or automatic headlamp operation. When you place the headlamp switch in the OFF position, and the ambient light sensor indicates low light conditions, the BCM energizes the headlamp relay for low beam operation. When the dimmer switch is placed in the HIGH position, the indicator lamp input to the BCM is pulled low. The BCM then sends a class 2 message to the instrument cluster in order to illuminate the high beam indicator lamp.
If the headlamp switch is left in the head position, the inadvertent power control feature will turn off the headlights 10 minutes after you turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. If you place the headlamp switch in the head position after the ignition switch has been turned OFF, or if the ignition switch is in the ACCY position, the headlights will remain ON until you turn them OFF or until the battery runs dead.

The headlight switch gets power for the headlights from a 50amp fuse.
The fuse powers the headlight switch then the dimmer switch breaks for high and low beams. So if the high beams work, the problem may be with the dimmer switch.
The dimmer switch is made into the turn signal switch on the column. You would need to check the low and high beam circuits at the switch for power.

Pull the head light switch and check it for out put.Do you have high beams?Check the low beam headlight bulbs.If you have high beams,and low beam bulbs are good,replace the dimmer switch.

Head lights on 1990 jeep wrangle won't work


Ckeck the headlight connections they are notorious for corroding. Check the ground connection for the lights. Pull your dimmer switch back as if you were flashing a car to pass and see if they work there. If they do you have a dimmer switch problem.

either the headlight switch is defective or the dimmer is, it can't be anything else, do the hi beams work ok, have you tried wiggling the dimmer switch to see if the low beams flicker?

High beams wont turn on.


First place to start is with headlight switch. I did have a case many years ago when both high beams were blown out at once, but this is rare. When you have the headlight switch out, jump power from te low beams to the high beam contacts. If high beams come on, replace switch.
