I also have a 98 cavalier that won't start when I turn the key, I thought that the security system had activated, but found out that when I turn the key, I was getting power to the starter relay on one side, but nothing to the the other side that goes to the exciter wire on the starter solenoid, I removed the relay and jumped the two connections with a paperclip (temporary of course), and now I can start the car with the key. I can't seem to find any wiring diagrams on the relay, I know that one side comes from the ignition and goes to the PRNDLE switch and to the relay and the other side goes to the exciter on the starter, but does anyone know where the other two prongs go to? should they have constant power?

    So what is your trouble?

  • Richard Scordino May 11, 2010

But...When you turn the key, is there power at the small single lead on the solenoid? If you jump across the two leads on the solenoid does it crank???(in park) Or, with the brake on (footbrake, with your foot firmly on it) try moving the shift lever slowly through the gears. (may be a neutral switch gone bad) What happened before you couldn't start it? Any big bumps or crashes? Do you have a remote start switch in there?

Replace the Relay going from the starter that is bolted on the frame above the cooling fan. When the security system is enabled it cuts the power going to the fuel pump and disables it.

98 chevy cavalier 2.2 will not crank. It's not the starter or battery as lights, dinging chime, and fuel pump engage...I turn the key and silence.

It sounds like the solenoid isn't sending fire to the coil while cranking. When cranking the voltage comes to the coil from the starter to by pass the coil resistor. Once cranked it starts going through the resistor to keep excess voltage from frying the coil.

Car won't start. Tried to turn over but that'd it. Help

Now that i see that the starter is not the problem then i should get you to check the fuel pump, turn the key off and the go open the fuel cover and take the cap off.Get someone to listen at the fill spout while you turn the key back to the on position, you should hear a buzzing noise for a few seconds. If you don't you need to try kicking the tank in the middle section of the tank,if that makes it work replace the fuel pump.If the fuel pump is not the problem the you may need the crank position sensor replaced.Neither one will put the check engine light on so it is a tough call.

Car does not start, sounded like battery, but battery ok. Turn key and a light on the lower left of instrument panel comes on, just says "CHECK" and what could be a picture of the engine(?), and the alarm...

I'm not an expert on cars, but from my experience, if the lights go dim while trying to start, but the engine doesnt turn, then it's usually the starter which is bad. It's because the starter is faulty and drawing too much battery power. I'v also heard of many people having problems with the security system (with cavaliers). but if the lights are going dim, that probably means the battery power IS reaching the starter, so i would concentrate on the starter first. If i remember correctly, my brother had a ford, and the ground wire came off of the starter, and when he tried to start it, there was nothing, but the lights would go dim. Again, similar to a faulty starter. Even if the starter itself is bolted to the engine, if the wires going inside the starter aren't connected properly, that could cause the problem. Other than starter being the problem, possibly a bad ignition switch???

My 98 Chevy Cavalier will not 'crank/turnover' when the key is turned - it is silent. The headlights/interior stuff all lights up and works fine but the car makes no noise when i turn the ignition

If the lights dim, its the starter, If they go out, you have a bAD BATTERY CONNECTION. This cranking with lights on . It may be neutral safety swith, May be clutch safety if manual trans. I'd go for the battery connection is poor. Ck the ground/neg first.

Starter gets power, all dash lights and fuel pump activate when key is turned to "on" but the starter wont turn the car over. no noise at all. i had what seemed like the same prolem on a sunfire. i had to...

Try tapping on the starter with a hammer while someone is turning the key to the start .Good luck,
CevRevposition.Make sure the car is in park with the emergency brake set & the wheels blocked for safety. If the starter workes after tapping on it,you have bad brushes & need a new starter

Want start or turnover

First ck for fuel pressure.Turn key on and listen for buzz sound near rear in gas tank. This is your fuel pump and when you cycle key off then on it should make noise for 2-3 seconds. If not have someone bang on fuel tank with the palm of their hand while you crank engine if it starts replace fuel pump. If no noise remove black cap on fuel rail on top of fuel injectors and push shrater valve with small screw driver and fuel should squert out. (this valve is the same as a tire shrater valve that you put air into) If not or very little fuel comes out then your fuel pump is bad or fuel pump wiring. Before replacing fuel pump take a test light and check the power wire and ground wire at fuel pump while cranking engine. If fuel system ok reply back for next step. Honda CR-V Will Not Start

Although I haven't heard of it happening so soon, it sounds to me like it's a bad starter. If the car is under warranty, I would recommend the dealer. If not, I would start with the starter, alternator, and then the spark plugs. It's just a little hard to tell without hearing what sounds it IS making.

2003 Chevy Cavalier not starting

When you turn the key, you should hear the fuel pump make a whiring noise as it dispenses the fuel. If there is no noise. the fuel pump is not working.

Have you checked the fuel shutoff inertia switch.?
Check your owners manual for location.
