Question about 2003 Dodge Dakota Club Cab

2 Answers

My emergency brake and four wheel drive just craped out on me.

I need to know if there is a manual or Idiots guide to fixing my E brake and four wheel drive on my 2003 Dodge Dakota. This vehicle is crucial to my family. We don't have lots of money so I'm trying to see if I can do this on my own. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated. Weather here is cold and Icey.

A couple of days ago as I was releasing the E brake, the mechanism popped like always but the brakes I guess must have frozen to the roters. It drove hard for a while than I heard the pop coming from the rear wheels, than clanging loose metal rattling as I drove. I asked a friend and he said that as long as the calipers released, or broke off it would be ok to continue driving it. Today on my way home while in four wheel drive I felt tension like something was gripping my wheels and than a pop, like a piece of metal broke off and than my truck began to drive smooth again. Thats when I realized, later, that I lossed my four wheel drive. I don't know much about fixing anything automotive but am going to learn quickly. Please help if you can!

The emergency brake system on the dakota is a drum, shoe and cable type brake system. The rear rotor is actually a drum/rotor. The sound that you heard is likely a thrown shoe. Since the brakes are not used very often, the pad of the shoe sometimes breaks free from the shoe itself and that is likely the cause of the noise and the dragging sensation. You will have to remove the rotor to access the shoes. As for the 4X4 not working, I can't help you.

the brakes got this device on it called limiter its a notification that it time for new brakes, rotors mite need turns or rotors need replacement, do not wait to long, you begin brake failure, parking brake maybe sticking while you are still driving.

Whats the procedure for engageing the 4 wheel drive on a 2004 chevy Silverado HD 2500 with automatic transmission

The best way is to take your time...,Set Emerg brake, start vehicle and put into neutral..Engage 4 wheel drive, look at your dash gauge area for 4 wheel drive light to come on..Put truck in reverse and release park brake..,Back up 10ft.slowly..Then put it in drive and pull up 10 ft.slowly then you should be in four wheel drive..

I have a 2004 Ford expedition I need to know how

The problem with these units is the Emergency brakes are inside of the rear rotors. This causes problems in several ways. The E. brake material can jam inside the rotor/drum and the E. brake needs to be fully retracted to give clearance to remove the rotor. Sometimes the rotor rusts to the axle hub.

Check the link behind the rotor. There are different styles and this pivot may need to be hit with something to drive it closed. Just because the brake cable is retracted does not mean the pivot is fully retracted.

For rust, sometimes it is necessary to put the trans in neutral and turn the axles at the same time you squirt oil in behind the wheel studs. By rotating the axle shaft and tapping the rotor, you force oil into the back surface of the rotor. A rotor puller may be necessary.

Emerg Brake is stuck and engaged, won't release -

ok then. the E-brake cable is not broken just stuck, the cables tend to get rusted and thgis happens all the time,What you can do is go under the truck and manualy pull the cables rear of the truck this should release the brake.
As for the four wheel drive the E-brake has nothing to do with it. on the transmissions transfer case there should be a switch or a manual lever that a cable hooks to this is most likly your four wheel drive problem unless you have locking hubs where you have to pysicly get out and lock the hubs at the wheel then the locking hubs may be worn broken or bad.

Emergency brake

look under the front of the rubber boot that covers the bottom of the park brake handle, u will see a nut on the end of the park brake cable, tighten it until u reach the proper adjustment.

Jeep stuck in low four wheel drive

Put the transmission in neutral, emergency brake off, foot off the brake pedal, now try shifting out of 4 wheel drive low. If that doesn't work, drive forward, and again do the above, trans. in neutral, roll to a stop, foot off brake, try to disengage. What you're probably experiencing is called drive shaft 'wind up', and it is very difficult to disengage, but do the above and it should shift out of 4 low. countrycurt0
