If the injector stuck open the cylinder would be rich and that should turn the check engine light on.
It could have been a bad plug, or a lean mixture on that cylinder.
How are the rest of the plugs ?

SOURCE: engine miss at idle. cylinder 1 and 3 has no fire

Try the ignition module. This is more than likely your problem. It is on the coil pack where the wires connect to.I have had a few of these go on me.This should take care of your problem.Hope this helps.Good luck.

I would definitely do a compression test on all cylinders, compare all cylinders to each other. You are not really looking for a specific reading but all cylinders should be about equal. As little as 10 psi difference can cause a misfire issue. If a compression test looks suspicious engine diassembly will be required for diagnosis. starting with the valve train, then the cylinder head to look for cracks. Possibly burnt valves or excessive carbon build up on valves. If no problem is found check the lifters or the camshaft for worn lobes. If the compression is good, it may be caused by a defective powertrain control module or faulty wiring between the PCM and coil.

I have a 98 4runner with 300000 miles. It's been running excellent but day before yesterday it started sputtering like a tractor when driving and idoling. Service engine light blinks when in overdrive, and...

First check the plugs. Pull the #6 plug and look at the electrode. If it's wet and/or dark (black) it's probably not firing correctly. What is the spark plug gap? Is the center electrode eroded (not flat on the end)? Swap in another plug and see if it makes any difference. How old are the plugs?

Second, check the wires. Did you replace the wire(s) when you changed the coil pack? They should be replaced periodically (I replace the wires on my '96 4Runner at about 100k miles). Check the wires with an ohmeter. Resistance should be around 16-17.5k ohms (depends on length).

FYI, each coil pack on your vehicle fires two spark plugs. The #6 spark plug is fired by the #3 cylinder coil pack, so if the coil pack were bad, most likely both the #3 and the #6 plugs would not fire.

Several things may cause this: 1. Bad distributor cap. 2. loose connections on one or more spark plug wires. 3. Cracked coil. 4. Bad injector. 5. Cracked spark plug.
So did you recently pressure wash your engine? It is possible if you did that the cold water may have cracked a spark plug ceramic.
So this is a start. A place for you to begin to look.

It could very well be the coil pack.

I have the EXACT same problem with my 2000 Ranger.

Have changed the exact same things you have and the closest thing that helped at all was the wires\plugs.

I have researched this on the truck forums and many of these issues are being solved by the coil packs... (but not all)

You have two coils on this engine. Test each wire for spark with the engine running. You'll find at least one wire not sparking. replace the coil that has the wire that's not sparking.
