Trnsfer case wont engage

On a 1999 chev suburban with the eng running or while driving the four wheel drive will not engage. But if I turn the key to the on position wait for the light on the four wheel drive to do there thing then engage four wheel drive it will operate. same to disengage and when it disengages it lets off a loud clunk like it is in a bind all tires are the same size on level ground. Are there clutches inside the transfer case or just what could this be Thank you in advance for any help you can be

This vehicle has a solenoid on the front differetial that switches between 2W and 4W drive. The mechanism also contains a swtich that tells the truck what position it is in. Your problem may be a faulty solenoid. It is relatively easy to replace.

You may need to change the fluid in your transfer case. Also are you sure it's not ingaged? Sometimes it will ingage but the switch that turns on the light won't so your don't know for sure. Try shifting into low range. Same problem?

Do you have the switch on the dash or the shifter on the floor?

  • David Robinson Dec 30, 2008

It actually sounds like it might be poor contacts. Try cleaning all of the contacts in the circuit. Also check the fuse to see if it's the correct amperage. Try puting a higher amp fuse in to help overcome bad connections. Good luck. Please rate me so I know if I help. Thanks.

Try checking the plug at the transfercase. All of the switch is done there. Otherwise the solenoid needs to be replaced. Let me know what you find.

I have a 1999 GMC Suburban. I have automatic four wheel drive but when I shift into four wheel high it makes clunking sound. I have not tried four wheel low. I wondered why I can still use auto four wheel...

the auto 4 wheel does the same as part time in jeeps, it engages only when the vehicle loses traction. when auto 4 wheel is on the truck isn't fully in 4 wheel drive. my 02 sierra makes the clunk noise too but it does engage. try checking your fluids, i know its way pass the time for me to change mine out.

1993 chev half ton, four wheel drive will not engage

There is a switch on the transfer case that likes to go out on these, they are about $15 or the front differential actuator is bad, the actuator is the round cylinder that is screwed in under the front diff, both very easy to change

Four wheel drive wont engage

If you have push button 4-Wheel Drive, it is recommended that you use it every once in a while, in order to keep gunk, rust, and corrosion to build up on moving parts. The mostly likeley (though not definite) reason would be that you let the 4-wheel drive unused for so long that corrosion has built up on the parts and the actuator that engages the 4-Wheel Drive doesn't have the power to engage it past the corrosion. You'll need to take it in to be cleaned, or to have parts replaced. In the future, every month or so, engage 4-Wheel Drive and drive around in some mud, grass, sand, or any other loose ground for a bit, just to keep the parts moving and clean.

The service Four wheel drive light is to alert the operator the system is not being read properly by the ECU.

If the ECU loses contact with or position of the Transfer case actuator motor the service light will come on. Same thing goes for the front diff actuator.

So it may be a bad switch, sensor, or an actual problem in the 4WD linkage. This is not a Oil Change light that you can ignore a few extra weeks - it indicates a problem that should be taken care of ASAP to avoid costlier problems down the road.

1979 ford f-250 four wheel drive won't engage

I take it the transfer case shifter feels okay (shifts through all four gear positions), so try jack up one side of front end, rotate wheel while looking in knuckle to see if drive axle turns, if it does, then hubs engaged. Now if someone holds the front d shaft, and wheel won't turn, then both hubs are engaged. Next put t case in 4xhi or 4xlow, if you cant turn the wheel, then the t case is engaged, and all is normal. If wheel still turns at this point, then the t case is not engaged for some reason, but post again if it does. Hope this helps.

Jimmy wont lock in four wheel drive.

You need to see if the transfer case engagement motor is defective.
