What would cause misfiring in cylinders 2 and 3 in the 97' Pontiac Grand Am?
I have the same problem with a 2000 4 Cyl. Grand Am. MisFiring, higher octane fuel or octane booster aditives seem to lessen the problem however does not ultimately resolve the issue. I have ran fuel injector cleaner with very little success. Every time I take it to someone they want to change the Coil tower. The coil tower has been changed 4 times in the last two years. Idles rough, shuts off periodically, spudders on inclines, generally misfires. Connected an ODB2 observed no problems. Short of having the fuel injectors cleaned or replaced I'm at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.
There are no wires on the 2000, they are coil packs. i have the same problem with mine, cylinders 2 and 3 misfiring. i took it to a local repair shop and replaced the ICM and the coil packs and it is still doing it. any ideas would be greatly appreciated i dont want to keep replacing parts i dont need to

No, a plugged converter would cause the engine not to breathe properly. Too much back pressure would stall the engine or make it run very poorly. It would not be local to any one cylinder-all of them would be affected.
To diagnose a misfire in one cylinder, well, you start at that cylinder. It could be ignition related- the spark plug and spark plug wire for #6, possibly the ignition coil for #6 in the coil pack for the engine. (A v-6 would have 3 coils in the coil pack, one coil for 2 cylinders.) It could also be fuel related, so the fuel injector for cylinder 6 should be considered. And the last reason for a misfire is usually the most expensive repair: low compression in #6. This may be a head gasket problem, or a piston ring problem, or one of the valves for #6 may not be sealing well, causing low compression and the resultant misfire. The engine computer codes a misfire when it senses low power output from that particular cylinder. The misfire causes a lag in crankshaft rotation, and the crankshaft position sensor senses it.
might be cylinder head gasket leaking to combustion chamber,small leak that it can sip into combustion chamber and burn but the coolant will not burn completely so will stick to spark plug and cause miss fire.
The coil pack is most likely the problem for the miss fire on the cylinder,but the engine most of the time will still run,just poorly.Crank shaft sensor would be the next thing to check,if there is fuel pressure present at the fuel rail.Also enough fuel pressure.
Fuel in Cylinder Is CAUSED Most Likley BY THE MISSFIRE Check Spark at that Cyl. & Correct that. ALSO Fuel in oil Breaks Down Viscosity of the OIL so I Would Eliminate the Fuel in OIL Problem First to Determine if No Oil Pressure in top end
