Question about 1988 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

Can I use Champion power steering fluid (plus Stop Leak) in my Nissan Maxima power steering fluid reservoir. It is mineral-based and Champion says it is compatible "with most foreign models." I know the manual recommends Dextron III automatic transmission fluid but I have a new bottle of Champion that I'd like to use if it is OK.

I would use only what is reccomended by the manufactuerer because using the wrong fluids may cause you some damage

Heres an a pic that will help. The transmission has no reservoir, but has a dip stick. This is also the location for adding transmission fluid. You must use a very slim funnel. garyca.jpg

I need to add some power steering fluid to the reservoir. I don't have any but I do have automatic transmission fluid. Can I use that?

Hi,
I would not recommend adding transmission fluid in your power steering pump.
Years ago one could get away with it.
If you do not have a Audi dealer near by,
Parts houses have a universal power steering fluid for sale.

Power steering is out what do i need to do to fix it

replace power steering pump, belt, replace with clean power steering fluid, replace power steering hoses as well. if its making a sound look for leaks, try stop leak first.

if there is a leaking seal in the power steering rack and pinion or in the hydraulic pump, a power steering stop leak may swell the seal enough to stop the leak. if there is still a leak, it is likely a damaged / corroded line or fluid cooler. next time you need to top up your fluid, i recommend Lucas brand power steering stop leak / treatment. after a couple top ups it will stop the leak it if is a rubber seal problem. good luck!

Power Steering Fluid

sometimes adding brake fluid to the power steering pump will stop the leak if its not to bad.you may have to keep adding as it leaks down untill you use about a bottle ,before it stops the leak.
