Check your heater control cable and check your coolant control valve for vacuum operations. control valve located under hood @ coolant hoses leading to the heater core. cable operates a blend door inside truck under dash/behind glove box.. this should help

SOURCE: HAve a 1996 Ford explorer v-8 that is overheating,

With cool engine... open radiator cap and look inside radiator. Do you see lots of sediment and calcium growth on radiater tubes? If yes, a coring may be needed. If only slightly bad, a radiator flush may be needed... then refill with 50 percent antifreeze.

Good thermostat, cleaned cooling system, non-leaking water pump, good water flow via water pump... nothing else left (unless you put the thermostate in backwards)..

SOURCE: change transmission

Call a local used auto parts yard, they usually have books that will tell if the parts are interchangable.

SOURCE: 1998 Ford Explorer: No heat. Checked everything

take out the glove box, you will see a white box about 3 inchs square with wires pulged into it, this is the diverter control, take the screws out, and remove it, then see if you cand move the diverter by hand too get heat, if you can then you need too replace the control or just lock the diverter in the heat position, i had this same problem last week in a 98 explorer and liked too never found it , ive got heat now!!!

Testimonial: "yay! I finally have heat! Thank you so much for your help. "

1993 Ford Explorer heats but when driving drops right down

you live in a cold place-the thermostat you replaced may not be good-try another one-or put card board in front of grille, not against radiator that could cause overheating- cheers Denny

How long have you had the vehicle? If you purchased used. someone may have bypassed the core. Make sure all lines are connected.
Is the blend door moving when you select heat/cool?

1996 ford explorer no heat heater control valve replaced and thermostat air is blowing cold it switches to defrost and floor with no problem

there is a valve on the heater hose under the hood. its either vacume or cable operated. check to see if valve is moving. this controls the water flow into the heater core. if this is stuck then thats your problem.also if its not cable operated make sure its getting vac to the actuator

i wonder if possibly a defective thermostat, that it is sticking open.
to bench test thermostat place in a pot,if you have a candy thermometer all the better ,place in cool water and bring to boil checking temp.it should open alittle at a time until being fully open at what ever temp it is rated at
then slowly add cold water and it should close in a similar fashion

High mileage 1996 Ford Explorer v8 overheats at 75-80 mph

if your mechanic seen no leaks from hoses or thermostat housing its sounds that either your fan clutch or your thermostat is bad. if its heats will driving streets and not highway its your fan clutch and needs to be replaced. if it overheats in streets and highway its your thermostat and needs to be replaced, you will need a thermostat and gasket with some silicone. Drain, follow the radiator hose to the housing and take 3 bolt off, clean housing well,CAREFULLY install the t-stat exactly the way is was taken out (pic), gasket, sillicone, bolt. ecc3d0c.jpg   its an easy job. Good luck!
