How to change the altanator on a 2001 pontiac montana

There are two ways to do this job, either pull the wiper assembly out or lower the front part of the engine support cradle.
What I do and think the easiest way is to lower the engine cradle. Heres how to do that:

  • Jack up the wheels off the ground and place jack stands under the body behind the frame
  • disconnect the air filter boot that runs from the air filter to the throttle body
  • take the 2 front torque struts mounts off that goes from the top of the engine to the top of the radiator
  • place a jack under the front frame in the center and remove the 2 front frame bolts
  • lower the jack that holds the front frame until the engine drops down enough to slide the alternator out. watch the throttle cable and the cruise cable. if they start to bind , remove them from the engine. may have to take the tires off to gain enough room.
  • The frame will come down far enough to get the alternator out. a lot easier than to remove the wipers

Whats the procedure for removing and installing a altanator

Well first unconnect the battery, Loosen the "Slacker" and remove the belt. Unbolt the alternator and replace it the same way. Take a picture of or draw a diagram on where the belt acually goes if your replacing that too. I always replace the belt while i am doing something like that.
Please leave a good comment on me on here.
Thanks

I'm changing the altanator on a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire. How do I release the belt tension?

Loosen the tensioner for the accessory belt for the alternator and remove the belt. Remove the two long bolts that are holding the alternator in the bracket.
(Sometimes you have to remove the tensioner arm completely or just loosen it and it will slide over to relieve tension on belt)

Can the altanator be rebuilt right on the car battery light came but charge in battery

No, the alternator needs to be removed from the vehicle so that it can be disassembled, inspected and repaired.

How do i take the altanator out

The alternator is below the powersteer pump. You will need to remove the fanbelts, and then remove the powersteer pump.
Once the pump is off you will have easier access to the alternator.
Remember you must disconnect the negative terminal on the battery before you commence any work.

Remove all the wiring from the alternator and then remove the top and bottom bolts and it should come out quite easily then.

Hope this helps

Thanks
