Check for marks on the cam cog,s,also TDC marks on the front balancer,or fly wheel housing for window hole., Make sure evey thing lines up to avoid disaster, like bent valves.
Heres a diagram for your 2006 kia, this will show you the line up marks on all the gears, cams and crank, make sure after you line them up and install the belt you use a wrench and turn the crank bolt by hand two revaloutions and make sure the marks line up, other wise you could damage the engine if they dont line up, this is a could test to make sure they line back up, good day,
YOU HAVE 2 CAM GEARS . A INTAKE CAM AND AN EXHAUST CAM . ON THE INTAKE CAM THERE IS AN I FOR INTAKE WITH A MARK STRAIGHT ABOVE IT AND ON THE EXHAUST CAM THERE IS A E AND RIGHT ABOVE THAT IS A MARK. LINE THE I MARK UP WITH THE MARK ON THE BACK OF THE INNER COVER [WHICH IS A LITTLE MARK KINDA LOOKS LIKE AN ARROW] THIS IS ON BOTH SIDES . ON THE CRANK THERE IS A KNOTCH ON THE BACK OF THE TIMING GEAR FOR THE CRANK AND A MARK ON THE THE COVER LINE THE 2 UP AND YOUR THERE. IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS YOU CAN E MAIL ME GOOD LUCK
You dont line up the belt itself - you line up the sprockets and other pulley wheels, then put the belt on.
There should be marks on your camshafts (in and ex) and main pulley, line these up and allow the belt to 'self-tension' on the wheels all should be good.
the timing marks are as follows... if you are not able to see the picture the intake cam gear will line up with the mating mark on the rear cover .... the "I" needs to be straight up... the exhaust cam the E needs to be straight up. the crankshaft mark is a nothch in the rear of the crank gear which needs to line up with a pointer on the front of the aluminum oil pump housing. the keyway on the crank needs to be vertical. the marks on the rear cover are dimples in the cover. this is an interferance engine DO NOT ROTATE CRANK OR CAMS WITH BELT OFF. IF YOU HAVE BROKEN THE TIMING BELT DAMAGE TO ENGINE HAS ALREADY OCCURED AND YOU WILL NEED A VALVE JOB!!!! there is no exception on this engine. if you have tried to crank it over and the belt is broken the head is no good!
