The copper element of the thermostat always faces the engine, when the engine reaches the proper temp. the thermostat opens to the upper radiator hose side so coolant can flow to the radiator to be cooled and returned to the engine thru the bottom radiator hose.

HOW DO YOU PUT ON THE GASKET FOR thermostat housing ON 1990 F150

Find the upper radiator hose, and follow it to the engine. it connects to the thermostat housing. drain some coolant and remove the two or three bolts to get to the thermostat (recommend replacing every time you have this open). Clean the engine mating surface and thermostat housing surface. then use the new gasket, or RTV and bolt back down.

R&r thermostat 1991 f150 6 cyl

The thermostat is located where the upper radiator hose meets the engine usually fastened by two bolts to the engine. After removing the bolts pull the hose assembly off the engine and the thermostat is inside. You will need to replace the gasket as well and maybe add some antifreeze as whats in the hose will leak out.
