Question about Jeep Cherokee

3 Answers

I have a 99 jeep cherokee sport and when I shift into 4 wheel drive a horrible grinding and clunking sound ensues. Its almost as if it is trying to engage but slips the connection. Any idea what this is? or cost of repair?

With out seeing the vech it might one off two problems . first jack the frt of the vech up there is a frt drive shaft that gose to frt axle check the frt ujoints. second you did not state when the noise started? is it making the noise setting still our moving, that why i suggested to cvheck the frt ujoints. on the back off the trans there is a transfer case, it is chain driven if the nosie starts when you engauge the four wheel drive the section that engauges the frt wheels might have failed. i would not try to peice meal this repair, replace as a unit unless you can get a good warrntey on the repair

Some vehicle have a spacefic routine you have to go threw to go from 4 to 2. Try it in neutral. or after you shift back into 2 drive in reverse for a bit till it pops back into 2.

Try neutral. or in drive, but just crawling. Give light pressure to the stick and sort of let it just fall into 4x4

How to shift a 1998 jeep grand cherokee into 4 wheel drive

Four low is almost never used. I use it on very steep rocky or muddy trails in the woods or to pull someone out of mud or a ditch. Though some will shift standing still it is best do do this while rolling. Four high can be shifted at low speeds of 2 to about 35mph (higher also but not really good idea) Low can only be shifted between 2 to 10mph. If you find yourself stuck and unable to shift because you aren't rolling you can also turn the engine off, engage the transfer case and re-start. That avoids having the gears clashing together. Best rule is if it begins to grind, don't force it.

Could also be a jammed transfer case linkage.. I had the same problem and it was the linkage getting jammed up and not pushing all the way and only half catching the sprocket. $10 part *crosses fingers*

Grinding and clunking noise while turning in 4 wheel drive only. Ford Explorer XLT 2003

I agree w/ Dave, if u have a part time system, u should not use 4wd on dry pavement, if it's full time 4wd, there are 3 couplings that shift torque to different axles to to allow wheels to spin at different revolutions, and u should not experience the 'driveline wind-up' ,or torque bind. If u do, the system needs to be inspected for problems.

Best way to shift from 2 hi into 4 hi or low is to have the vehicle completely stopped, in neutral, and then move the shifter lever. Any other way can damage your transfercase, which sounds like thats what you did. Trans shop.
