The shift-on-the-fly/on-demand four-wheel drive with auto-locking hub control with manual shift depending on the model/version would either be electrically operated, electro-mechanical or vacuum activated. Since this is a critical component and requires experienced work, it is often not recommended for DIY (do-it-yourself).

Best recommended course of action would be to seek the services of qualified professional or your dealer.

Hope this helps.

hello and greetings. you did not say what driveline options
were purchase when car was new. so, can not answer.
but if car is PT 4wd, I can. if not get it fixed, by any 4wd shop.

the car is full time 4wd or AWD ?
PT:
the Part time 4wd must not be driving on dry pavement.
so drive to dirt or grass or ice and then shift back to 2wd

there is a TSB from Suzuki on wind up.

exceptions?
sure , the 2004 options statement here. and the rules for PT 4wd.
http://www.fixkick.com/part-time-test.html

Suzuki Grand Vitara/Escudo -full-time 4WD using limited-slip center differential, off-road 4WD with selectable center differential lock and low range transfer case 4 mode (4h, 4h lock, 4l n), traction control and electronic stability control
Suzuki offered as an option AWD for Grand Vitara's in 2004 (XL7 too) Some Suzuki AWD you can not use lock on dry pavement, so read the operators guide carefully.

suzuki sells the operators guide if lost,
$4 day pass
$25 for full pdf.

Have 2001suzuki 4 wheel drive want lock in .it shifs in gear but dont make contack with the transfer cas

4wd, is complex so ask and be more specific.
but wont make contact with the transfer case.what does this mean. ? the shifter or the 2 prop shafts.?
I think you mean the car drives perfect in 2wd. but will not engage 4wd, right? and fails in 4L and 4H too. right?

i still think that you need to look at the frt drive shaft assembly, i am not saying that you may still have a front diff problem but the problem that you are stating happens only when you have all four wheel locked in correct. pulling the frt diff cover is simple, you will be able to check the fluid condation and do visual inspection, but do not forget the transfer case and frt drive shaft trun the frt diff good luck

Transfer case

you will have to take the shifter out of the transfer case, remove the shifter bushing, then look down into the transfer case.you will need a flash light, you will see the ends of two rods that have slots in them.take a long screwdriver and move the rods so the notches in them are even with oneanother.the rods will slide back and forth.once the notches are lined up you can shift your tranny.the bushing needs replacing in the shifter on the transfer case.look on EBAY and you will find them.

Underneath transfer shifter is what is called a "sheet" under the shift lever ball. The sheet is a plastic spacer that breaks up, remove broken pieces and tnstall new shet, available at a Suzuki dealer
