That sounds like a serious problem with the guts inside of the transfer case. Or it could be as simple as the shifter motor not working correctly. Take the motor off and see if it turns correctly when you press the buttons. Also, leave a comment telling what the lights say.

Four buttons on dash for 4 wd. won't stay on 2 wd and it goes back to 4wd by itself

Sorry, but three possibilities. Most likely the 4wd actuator motor on the transfer case went bad. This is pretty common. They also encounter switch problems, but it sounds like your switch is doing what it's supposed to. One more thing, there is a 4wd control module, usually in the right kick panel. I'm betting on the shift motor though.

Locked up in 4wd low

Disconnect the battery for 30 minutes and try again. Be sure to follow the correct procedure for shifting from 4lo to 4hi or 2wd. That would be: engine running, transmission in neutral, foot on brake, shift to 4hi or 2wd. If it is a push button shift, hold the shift button in for a few seconds. If you hear the shift motor actuate, put the transmission in reverse and back up a few feet. If that does not work you may have a bad shift motor.

SOUND LIKE PROBLEM IS IN TRANSFER CASE SWITCH OR THE TRANSFER SHIFT CONTROL MODULE.IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DASH.IT CONTROLS SHIFT MOTOR FROM 2WD TO 4WD.ALSO CHECK SHIFT ROD AND CABLE FOR BINDING AND DAMAGE.

I've had my jeep Liberty 5 years bought it brand new never really used the 4WD until now and it is very hard to put into 4WD; it goes into halftime ok but not 4WD and when I finally got it there it went...

Make sure when you are shifting your transfer case in and out of 4wd that your tranny is in the neutral position. This allows all the gears to slow down to synchronize. Try that and if doesn't work write another post and I will reply, Roger

94 Sonoma 4x4 won;t lock into 4WD.

yea its not shifting again like before ? sounds like your transfer case solonoid has possably gone bad again .. these are a sometimes dont work item .. It is what shifts the transfer case into gear and it might be a little worn or weathered and not letting the switch kick it in gear all the way from the N position. thanks Jerry holler if you need more.
