Question about 2001 GMC Yukon XL

1 Answer

4LO problem I foolishly tried to run over a snow bank or pile of snow plowed to one side of the road. In doing so, I got stuck. In trying to rock back and forth from drive to reverse and switching into 4LO in my 2001 Yukon XL, the gearbox won't shift back out of 4LO and it feels like the steering belt is broken. There are no broken belts but I can hardly turn the steering wheel.Help.Mark

But would the fluid be low? Its not.

Also, it feels like its almost locked into position. I'm old enough to know what a lack of power steering feels like, this is much worse.

    Anyone?

Went to the car wash, now the 4WD system is fine...but I broke the power steering pump. Getting that fixed now.

Sounds like you may have a problem with the power steering pump. Notorious for these pumps shaft to break, causing "armstrong" power steering. As far as the 4wd low problem, ick.

While driving down road my western snow plow is rocking all over.

not good or safe! check all mounting pins and frame mounts. A lot of force is on snow plows and the frame mounts often need to be welded up. I imagine it is the whole unit and not just the plow.

Try backing up, let off the gas, then jerk it back out. Or, try rocking it back and forth.

I can move it in to low log but i cant move it into hi

Try shifting the transmission into neutral then pressing 4hi. It should flash and then engage. Shift into drive again and re-try. Anytime shifted from 4hi to 4lo it needs to be shifted into neutral during transition. There is no need for 4lo position, unless you are really stuck off road, in the mud up to the windshield. Do not use 4lo unless you 4WD off road.

Check the linkages and the rod for the neutral safety switch under the column and the linkage under the vehicle where they go to and from the transmission.Hope this helps.Good luck.

On a 1999 pathfinder, what 4 wheel gear do I use in the snow

Unless your climbing big hills, I'd leave it in 4 high, for normal roads. If you happen to get stuck, better to shift to low, to get out, then when back on highway, or main roads use high. Remember, 4 wheel drive might get you out of the snow or whatever better, but it will slide sideways, and stop the same as 2 wheel drive, so don't think you can go faster than those ahead of you with 2 wheel drive, if roads are bad. Sorry, I know, you know better, but I see more 4 wheel drives in the ditches around here in Canada, than 2 wheel drives, in fact I've seen 2 beside each other in same ditch, as I slowed down for ice patch, and drove past them. Yes I did check to make sure they were o.k. though.
