Get a can of carb clean and spray short bursts in engine area and brake booster do this while motor is cool when doing so if engine idle changes thats where the vacuum leak is they do have intake leak problems

The pulse damper vacuum hose on a 2001 Mazda Tribute V6 3.0 connects to the intake manifold. Look for a small vacuum hose coming from the pulse damper and follow it to the intake manifold. The intake manifold is typically located on the top of the engine and will have a series of hoses and cables connected to it. The pulse damper is typically located near the fuel injectors and fuel rail. Make sure the hose is connected securely and in good condition, as any leaks or damage can cause issues with the engine's performance.

IF FUEL SYSTEM OKAY.YOU HAVE INTAKE LEAK CHECK ALL VACUUM HOSES AND PCV VALVE FOR VACUUM LEAKS,HAVE VECHICLE CODE SCAN VECHICLE LOOK FOR TRANSMISSION FAULT CODE.FAULTY TORQUE CONVERTER CAUSE ENGINE TO SURGE.LOOK FOR TPS FAULT CODE.AND IDLE AIR CONTROL FAULT.THEY BOTH CAN CAUSE SURGE PROBLEMS.
Most likely cause is a leaking vacuum hose on your air intake. It's a common problem on tributes but should be easy and cheap to fix. Look for cracks, holes, or roughness on the small black pipes near your engine and air intake and while you're there check the end connections are secure/tight. If you find cracks, holes, etc then replace the hose, if the connection is loose, then tighten it..
It could also be that your Mass Air Flow sensor is stuffed. Not as cheap, but still easy to fix.
There is a vacuum leak in the vacuum hose system causing the problem. Verify all vacuum hoses. Especially the rubber parts connecting plastic hose to the joints. The high temperature causes these rubbers cracked no longer sealing properly with aging plastice hoses.
It is the head gasket. Have that replaced and you will be fine. You have an air leak. I was told by the mechanic at mazda that the anti freeze eats away at the gaskets. CRAZY, but it works. I still have an issue with my 2001 Tribute revving while in park. Its always something.
