This happened to me as well - always at the most inopportune time. When you get this, turn the ignition off, then turn to on (do not start). Let it sit there for about 10 minutes. Once the security light quits blinking you are good to go.

it sounds like the immobilizer is faulty. this will shut off the electrical feed to the starter motor. you will need to take it to a garage to get this fixed.
hope this helps.

i have a 1997 pontiac grand am and it did the same thing when you go to start car and it won't start after 3 trys you have to turn the key to the on postion and let it set for 11 min no more then 11 min then turn it off and count to 30 then it should start. there is no way to go around this wiring .i have asked everybody also if you disconect the battery for a while and hook it back up that might reset the computer and that will work that is what fixed mine for now its been 6 months and hasn't done i sense

I discovered the hard way- ($85.00 later) Step 1: turn key to "on" position. step 2: open driver door. (security light should be flashing on and off) step 3: wait ten minutes with key in "on position and driver door open. step 4: when 10 minutes is up-(youll know-because security light will have stoped flashing after 10 minutes) close driver door ,turn key to "off" position, then turn key "on" to start. drives me crazy!! I have to do it to mine sometimes 2-5 times a day! GM doesnt have a fuel reset button etc. like fords do.

The Theft System telltale will flash for 4 seconds and then remain "on" for 10 minutes. Theft System Learn Mode will display Disabled on the Scan ToolTurn the ignition "off" after the Theft System telltale goes "out".Repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times. After the Theft System telltale turns "off" on the 3rd key cycle, and Theft System Learn Mode will display Enabled on the Scan Tool, attempt to start the engine. Once the engine starts the password is learned.
