Question about 1990 Ford F250

Trans seems to be stuck between gears

I have a 1990 F-250 with a 5 speed manual and I removed the gear shifter from the trans to replace the carpet. When I replaced the shifter, the shifter seems to be stuck and will not move to any other gear. The weird thing is that the drive line moves by hand as if it were in neutral but if I let out the clutch the engine dies. Anyone ever have this happen to them?

    have a 1990 F-250 with a 5 speed manual and I removed the gear shifter from the trans to replace the carpet. When I replaced the shifter, the shifter seems to be stuck and will not move to any other gear. I think the shifter rails may have moved during the removal of the shifter, but I can't get them to move in any direction. I did try to move them with the shifter and with the shifter removed but no luck. The weird thing is that the drive line moves by hand as if it were in neutral but if I let out the clutch the engine dies. I did not get any error codes or lights on in the dash to indicate any other problem. Anyone ever have this happen to them?

Disconnect your shift linkage at the back of the tranny. Then try to shift the tranny manually. If it shifts easily, its a mount or linkage. If it does not, drop it and open it up and look inside. We can help you from there.

    also check your rear motor mount as it could be the problem as well

Is shift stick got deeper than usual,if yes you just need to pull it up hareder. For Ford cars the manual stick is surrounded by rubber things to hold it tight, probably you pushed it accidentally and it went down. You suppose to hear the click. And it looks like the only issue.
Removing the rubber cover will help a lot you will probably see the sticck is deeply down
Good Luck

I have had the same issue when replacing my transmission. This is a simple alignment issue. (what has happened is that you have accideltally tightened it down to where the neutral position is in a gear rather than neutral. I know it seems crazy, but you have to take it off again and put it back on. This time check where you placed the bottom end of the shifter in the gear box. Make sure you are in neutral before you tighten all of your bolts. (Perhaps have a friend hold the box while you shift around to make sure you got it right.) It is important to not just tighten them one at a time, but rather get them all started and then slowly screw them in counter clock wise turning them around half way down and then again all a quarter way down and then finish them off, so the gear box doesn't shift when you are tightening it.

    1)could be a foreign object in there somewhere 2)could be seized you might want to open it up and take a look?

    also it sounds like the synchronizers are bad.

    ============

    also It is possible that one of the cables going from the shifter to the transmission broke

    ===============

    Two items that might prevent the shifter from moving:

    1. Ignition key lock. If this mechanical part isn't releasing the mechanism to the transmission lever, the shifter will not move.

    2. Brake pedal switch. On some cars, one must depress the brake pedal in order to release the shifter out of Park. Could be a defective switch for that, too.

Remove trans pan and check your manual valve it may be broken, or linkage problem, if no problem found then you will need to take a pressure reading but that may be out of your capabilities, have a shop check your trans and give you a diagnostic.

Why do I only have fourth gear 1992 ranger 4.0 v6 five speed?

If you are luckey it may just be a broken shifter or shift fork.. either requires removing the trans.. This is a T5 trans parts are available for it but sometimes its cheaper to find a used trans than buy the parts. First thing.. remove the shifter and see if you can see anything wrong. you failed to tell us how this happened ?

My mazda demio aegeon 2000 keeps popping out of 5th gear.. also the other gears seem very stiff. what can i do about this sean

Knowing the mileage would be helpful...Set parking brake and make sure the shifter is in neutral..The best way to troubleshoot would be remove the shifter.Cover top of trans with a rag..Ispect the end of the shifter that slides into trans.,also check the shifter for abnormal wobble...many with that problem have a worn shifter..Inspect inside top of trans for abnormal wear also....The trans could have internal damage with high mileage...Also a worn shifter could damage trans....

2003 ford transit turbo manual gearbox, stuck in 2nd gear, cant start

does the clutch push normally or is the linkage broken not disengaging clutch, and then does shifter move around or locked and wont move, loose linkage in shifter or gears are jammed inside transmission and something went, if shifter wont move at all then trans is jammed inside and needs repair.

On my 2006 h3 it just has a loud clicking noise in each gear and will not move

it it an auto trans or manual trans? '
if its a auto trans: check to make sure your 2 or 4 wheel drive is not in neutral. try switching the slector or shifter around to make sure its fully engaged. sometimes they accidently slip out.
if its a manual trans: are you sure its actually going into each gear? it might be just stuck in neutral and need clutch work. those shifters have a lot of slack. probably needs a new throw out bearing or spacer to fully disengage the clutch

Automatic gear shift in 94 toyota tercel stuck

what is stuck?

the linkage or the cable from the shifter to the trans.?

block the tires so the car can not roll away...
open the hood and remove the cable from the shifter on the transmission.
see if you can manualy move the shifter on the trans.
if that moves... you may need to replace the cable (shift linkage)

98 Plymouth Voyager gets stuck in gear until I turn it off and on

if it gets stuck into second, on a dodge this is called limp mode. two sensors on the front of trans accesible by removeing the air box only. they have a black/cream colers face with 2 wires on each. the one by the engine is the input speed sensor(turbine rpm) the one towards the wheel is the output. if the output fails the speedo will stop working and trans will slam into second. if input goes will fault the same but no indicators. the pigtail wires break after yeas of flexing also. pigtails and sensors are avail anywhere sensor is about 20 bucks just specify in or out put. u can test too by unplugging test the sensor w a ohm meter on lowest avail scale, if any reading-its good, if overload-its pooh. this is if its a A604 4speed trans, pans is square w engine side of pan has a squiggle in it. and that trans buzzes when put into gear(normal) now if its a A670 3 speed trans, which is all mechanically controlled, there is a cable/linkage that goes from the engine throttle body down to the trans. on the trans shifter input shaft, its hollow, there is another shaft inside. this moves w the gas pedal to tell the trans how long to wait to shift and how hard to shift. the shaft on the trans get rusty and seized all the time on these. wd-40 the heck out of it and work it back and forth untill it moves freely independent of the shifter linkage. it only is moved by the throttle one way so the spring cant return it on its own when it starts rusting up... pheww- i hate typing this trans has a perfectly rectangular pan. good luck and let me know what you come up with!
