The car has been missing at certain speeds although it is fine at full power. Definitely not the standard plugs leads rotor or cap. I have had it to several mechanics who can't find the problem, so I have ordered a new computer and a throttle positioning sensor. But - where is the computer located in this vehicle? And who does one adjust the TPS once it's installed?

This could be a major project for someone.
The engine computer controls most anything connected to the engine, but the body computer affects the other things on your list.
So it could be one or both computers, or wiring harness problems.
Oh you can drive it, but drive it to the shop and have the EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation)valve replaced. That is what's causing your lack of power. It has to work in conjunction with all other emission control systems and once it' goes bad the engine will have no power but seams to work fine otherwise. Change the EGR valve.
If that is the only speeds where the problem exists, it is probably not an engine misfire. Most likely, the transmission is kicking in and out of overdrive. To verify this is the problem, try driving your truck with the shift lever in the "3" position. This will disable the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid which causes the transmission to go into overdrive. If the problem goes away, then the problem is definitely related to the TCC solenoid and not an engine misfire.
If you are sure the problem is not a transmission problem and you still believe that the problem is being caused by an engine misfire, I would be checking the EGR system for proper operation. A malfunctioning EGR system can cause engine misfire at certain speeds - especially speeds near the speeds you are describing.
People prefer the 22r but the 3.0 is an o.k. engine, it just doesn't have the great reputation that the 22r has. If it is low miles then it will be fine, the one I had only lasted a month, but without knowing prior treatment, that really doesn't say that it was due to a bad designed engine. I say if the truck is in good shape then it will be a great truck.
I see this a few days old now,my carbed 22r is getting about 18-19 mpg on 31" tires,or about 340 to a tank,so you should get about 540 kms off a tank bearing in mind my tank holds 18.6 gallons or 70 liters.Definitely something wrong with the truck,how does the truck run good power?is it auto or manual?
I've rebuilt my engine on my '86 22R-E.
I'm willing to bet the timing chain cover it cracked if the timing chain broke. Coolant does run through the timing chain cover and the water pump is mounted to it.
Best thing to do is get a Chilton manual at the Autoparts store. It runs about $20. That way you have better researchmaterial. It will give you step by step procedure to do repairs.
If you have a 22r carbed then all 22r carbed engines from 1981-1995 will interchange. You may need to use sensor out of your old engine however. The 20r,22r,22re,22ret all have the same mounts and tranny bolt patterns. how ever there are lot of differences. you can swap from a 22r to a 22re but you must also swap the entire vehical wiring harness to do it right. if you have a 3.0L i would keep the same engine. some people have swap to the tacoma 3.6L but that is a expensive swap not exsactly bolt on so to say. If you have a 22re then stay with the 1986-1987 22re because the newer 22re use different computers, electronics ,sensors and more.. Same story with the 22ret. I hoped this helped.
