White smoke is water in the cylinders/exhaust. (bad head gasket) White with a bluish color is oil. Black smoke is to much fuel. Which do you have.

What caused white smoke from exhaust?

Generally, white smoke is engine coolant burning. If it only happened for a few seconds, you may have leaked some on the exhaust pipes.
I would check the engine oil and coolant levels with the engine cold, and then look for coolant leaks.

Have a 2003 volkswagen passat 130 4 motion, when starting the engine there is white/ greyish smoke coming out of the exhaust, does not seem to be the head gasket as no signs of this e.g oil and water are...

blue is oil
White is coolant/water It will also smell kind of sweet
black is fuel

If you don't drive your car very many miles or let it sit for days/weeks at a time it is most likely condensation in the exhaust. Take her on a nice 50 mile brisk drive and see if the problem clears up. If it does think condensation if not you will need to dig further.

white smoke usually means blown head gaskets, have radiator fan checked, water pump, check coolant for oil in coolant, could be blown in between cylinders, causing coolant to go out exhaust, have compression check done on cylinders.

Why did you replace your radiator?
I ask this because I assume the car was overheating or overheated after the radiator swap. If this is the case then how long was it driven while over heating?
Driving in an overheated condition even for a few minutes is enough to warp the aluminum head, (just ask my mother, not once but twice).
First thing I would check is the oil. If the oil appears milky it means that coolant\water if flowing between the oil ports and coolant ports in the head. Also was the color of the smoke white and did it have a sweet odor. If yes to either then the coolant\water is flowing from the coolant ports into the combustion chamber. You would aslo notice a loss of coolant\water with no apparent source.
It sounds like you have a blow head gasket and you can be sure that it also warped the head. A compression test would confirm this.
I really wish I could give you a better explanation for this.

Daewoo Nubeira ...black smoke from exhaust + keeps overheating, do you think it is head gasket or could it be something else??

i pretty sure thats a head gasket. black smoke comes from burining oil. white smoke comes from burning antifreeze.

White smoke exhaust

White smoke is caused by coolant or water coming out the tail pipe. There is a chance that the white smoke was caused by water splashing up from a puddle onto the exhaust pipe. Keep an eye on the coolant level in the radiator in any event. If its less then there leak coolant leak in the car engine which is causing this problem....

White smoke from exhaust

White smoke from exhaust = water into the cylinders, when this happens it usually means head gasket gone or starting to go.
Check the water level, and take the car to the garage for a check up , if it is the head gasket, as I think, you risk to blow the engine at any time.
