My problem was the throttle control, apparently it is all controlled by infrared sensors now. When there is a problem the sensors can't tell how far the accelerator is being pressed and will shut off the engine. It cost me over $600 to fix.

OMG I have a 2006 limited expedition and I  just had the same problem happen to me this am. I was driving in to work and all of sudden the engine fail safe mode light turned on and my car at a stand still. I turned my car off and on and then it operated fine. I just called Ford and they are going to take a look at it this weekend. My car is still under warranty I purchased extended warranty so I hope that the warranty covers this problem!

I have only owned my 06 ford expedition for 1 year now and had nothing but trouble. Had to replace the brakes, tires, window motor, the altenator, battery and now driving down the road at normal driving speed the car stops and the engine fail mode lights up, I have to try and get off the road because the car locks up, so I come to a complete stop turn the engine off wait 30 seconds and it starts back up and drives again like normal. This has happened 4 times very scary! I took it in to the mechanic today and he isnt sure and said to take it to the ford dealer, which I was trying to avoid because I know they are quite expensive, but I guess I dont have a choice I just want it fixed and to feel comfortable driving my car again!

I encountered the same problem, my engine fail safe mode light came on and shut the car down. I took my car to my mechanic and he found the solution to the problem. The car needed a throttle body cleaning and the fuel filter needed to be replaced. After having my truck serviced my mileage increased from 14.6 mpg to 15.4 mpg

What does it mean when my car goes into engine fail safe mode?

It mean that the PCM received a bad reading from one of the sensors
most common fix would be
Either a bad flash in the PCM or a bad PCM or a bad TPS
go to the dealer and have them fix it
only the dealer can flash your PCM
also have them check the throttle body
and be cairful when they get that code they have a tendency to just stall out

2006 Ford Expedition starts for about 2 seconds then shuts off

thats strange....it sounds like total fail management mode.... try reseting it by disconnecting the battery for 5 mins , and retry ... one problem known is the starter pig-tail per TSB - 06-19-14 but thats for a NO-START.... check for basic fuel and ign. ...this will be hard due to diag requires a scanner.... all else fails you'll have to go to the dealer/shop for further diag.... hope this helps... or get back to me for what you tried and the outcome......GL

Sounds to me like the mass airflow meter, cutting in and out. When faulty it can completely shut a car off, and also ingauge limp mode. I hope this helps. Let me know how you get on.

does the engine completely shut off? It sounds like the electronic throttlebody is causing the problem.
