2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara cranks but won't start

When I try to start the vehicle it cranks, but will not start. We tested the battery (it is fine), but it says check engine soon. What could be the problem?

I seem to have the same problem at present, I take it this is a costly problem!

Use scantool to diagnose the problem... maybe some sensors don't work.

Most likely your timing chain.
This is a major problem 99 -05 V6 GV.
The Timing chain tensioner failed.
When the chain breaks it destroys the engine.
Unfortunately is an "Interference" engine.
This and the rear main seal are the big problems with these cars.

Check the compression in ALL the cylinders to confirm major engine damage.

With intermittent issues, you have to test when problem is ongoing. I realize testing can be a problem when sitting along side the road, somewhere, but, do what you can.
After it stalls, if it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the spark plugs, gasoline engine. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse. Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good.
If you lose rpm signal, the vehicle will die. If you lose that signal, it will probably effect more than one component, that's why you need to check for more than one issue. The rpm signal comes from crank sensor. Don't replace anything unless your testing points in that direction.

I have a 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.5liter and it was running fine i jus replaced valve cover gaskets and spark plugs now vehicle won't start and has no compression how did i loose compression?

so, you removed all 6 cop coils and 6 spark plugs.
then blocked the throttle open, and pulled the fuel pump relay
then checked compression and all 6 are zero not 150psi +
really? the throttle must be blocked open or the engine will not get air supply to make compression.
i bet you did no read the gauge instructions nor FSM steps, same, so false reading. here.
or didnt use a long hose screw in gauge, and tried to use rubber tipped chevy engine gauge , useless here)
did you remove that CMP sensor on the rear of the left head?
if you messed it up , it will never run. right. IT IS TIMED !
mess with this?

25609827-xehzdwn5iwh3l3ng4yvsd5t5-1-0.jpg
questions, does it run for 3 seconds on test fuel? sprayed?
is the Check engine light glowing key on? if not you blew fuses.!!!
pull battery neg lug before starting work?
connect scan tool and crank 5 seconds, get P03xx errors. DTC, bingo
check static timing>? yes, it has that. and a freeze jumper to check timing if the CMP was violated, in any way.
if you need help, ask, I have the full FSM on this car. 2 volumes.

if test fuel fails. you lost spark or fiddled the CMP or its UNPLUGGED.
I bet compression is perfect. I DO ! (9 out of 10 do it wrong is why, DIY shade tree )

I have a 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara i just replaced valve cover gaskets and spark plugs now the vehicle does'nt start it cranks but does'nt it has fuel but its nnot

no engine stated, and is an engine question.
G16,J20, or H25?
1.6l, 2.0L or v6 ?
my guess, is you removed spark plug wires and put them back out of order, never do that, always change wires 1 by 1.
or the firing order will be wrong, (cops excepted, coil over plug)

how many coil packs do you have.
1
2
4
6?
we cant guess any of that.

08 Chevy Cobalt wont start. Battery is good.?

Is there a warning light , padlock an car symbol lit when it won't start ? I assume it has to be a bad starter? Every time i jump the car it starts up fine.??? It wouldn't be a starter then ! Have the charging system check out . Have a voltage drop test on the starter circuit done . Test from the starter relay . check out videos on youtube , but don't assume anything . Test , Test Test .

Starter Voltage Drop

VEHICLE RELAYS Testing from the relay base

Plus you need to know how the starter system works for the vehicle your trying to diagnose . I 'am a GM tech , Chevy , Cadillac , buick , GMC. Have access to GM factory repair info. Been to a lot of GM training school's . The computers on this vehicle have a lot to do with the starting of the vehicle ,PCM - engine computer , the ignition switch is a low voltage input to the BCM - body control module , which will send a message over the GMLAN serial data communication network to the PCM to energize the starter relay or crank relay .The PCM also has to see a voltage input coming from the transmission range selector switch , showing it's in park or neutral , has to have correct fuel enable password from the theft module etc...
Also it take's is a little corrosion , lose connetion , lower then normal circuit voltage for problem to happen .
Factory service repair manual discription

Moving the ignition switch to the start position signals the body control module (BCM) through discrete inputs from the ignition transducer that engine crank has been requested. The BCM verifies that theft is not active and sends a serial data message to the engine control module (ECM) requesting engine start. The ECM receives a ground signal from the park/neutral position (PNP) switch or a signal from the clutch pedal position sensor notifying that it is safe to start the engine. Ground G105 supplies ground for the CRNK relay coil. The starter relay coil control circuit is then supplied voltage by the ECM closing the switch in the starter relay suppling 12 volts from the CRNK fuse to terminal A of the starter. Ground is supplied to the starter solenoid through the engine block.

The first step in diagnosing a problem like this , hooking up factory scan tool , checking for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's , checking inputs to control modules that are in charge of starting the vehicle .

Testing an knowledge is the way to a fix , an testing cost $$$$$

2003 Suzuki Grand Vitara won't start engine

what engine, state engine size and country.
there can only be 3 ways, to fail.
bad engine (low compresssion, us the $20 tool at WOT and see over 170psi.
Bad spark
bad fueling.
just because spark coils (COPS?) work on other car , dont mean much.
what counts is your car , its a system.
the cops, have fast 5mS pulse when firing, you using a scope to see that?
Im so curious, why not to the time old test, use a real spark plug
attached to the COP end, spark plug shell grounded to engine metal
and crank, is spark good x4? or x6 if V6 (engine NOT STATED)
is it? then spark is good, leaving fueling.
do not touch the spark plug cranking, it can hit 100,000 volts.
I use a ground strap on the spark plug casing, hands free, or you can be hurt bad, by the spark or when you jump and cut arm backing off
on cars that flood, is it flooding?
I found my engine compression good, then found all 4 sparks fire good.
so i pull the fuel pump relay. killing fueling.
i then use "test fuel" to start engine (again, text book tests)
I use the new CRC brand of test fuel with top end oiling.
i spray it in the plenum, and it starts.
if the spark plugs are bad, (part oftune it up)
it may not start if flooded,
use WOT at the throttle (cuts fuel) and start any flooded engine.
if the spark tips are black and stink of raw fuel (wet with fuel)
that means flooding.
pull the fuel pump relay ,test fuel runs for 3 seconds. each time.
3 second spray max. each time.
if that works out, then find reason for flooding if flooding.
if not flooding, you find dry sparks.
then trouble shoot no fuel.
fuel pressure not near 30 PS?
fuel pressure too high say, 60, it will flood for ever.
there are only 3 tests.
and 4 counting wet /dry sparks.
the tests done, will put you on the correct path every time.
no guessing, no swapping parts to other cars.

2004 Grand Vitara won't start

the trans only blocks cranking so we can ignore the overdrive lamp.
when car will not start, (state , what engine you have first)? 2.0L I4 or V6?
the first thing to check is .
is the gas tank above 1/4?
is there spark. on all 4 to 6 spark plugs.
are all fuses good.
does the CEL lamp glow key on, if not the ECU/PCM is dead and there will be no spark or fueling ever. but fuses can blow and disable ECU.
