I have the same problem with my Mazda 2001 ES. The problem began about a month ago, but the check engine light showed up yesterday. I've got an appointment at the garage today...I'll get back to you all if they fix this car problem.

What happens if the drive belt breaks

if a drive belt breaks, the debris can interfere with other engine components and do additional damage. rule of thumb belt life is 6yrs or 60000 miles. the belts operate critical engine systems ( alt, water pump, power steering pump) not something to short cut on. belts are noisey when cold due to additional load from battery use when starting or cold fuuids. have belts and tensioners checked for wear and correct operation

Car randomly loses power and speed when driving, but remains on

I have the same problem! Car is at ford dealership now. I'm figuring a bad fuel filter, clogged catalytic converter, heck, it could even be that the spark plugs need changing. Hoping for something minor! Will write what my problem is when I find out and you can take it from there
