I have exactly the same problem. some one said it was a shift solonoid inside the pan. i have seen these while changing fluid & filter but how can i test them? Solenoids usually set a code that can be checked with a code reader. Make sure that the oil in your transmission is full and clean...solenoids can get gummed up by varnish if trans is not serviced properly.

Look at the transmission control module and the shift solenoids inside the transmission. It's possible you have lost a connection in the harness plug that goes to the transmission.
IT IS NOT GOING INTO NEUTRAL. IT HAS LOST THE DIRECT DRIVE CLUTCH PACK INTERNALLY. SOUNDS LIKE IT IS HIGH MILEAGE. IF SO AND YOU CHANGE THE FLUID IT CLEANS UP ALL THE VARNISH IN THE TRANNY AND THE END RESULT IS TRANNY MALFUNCTIONS DEPENDING ON WHAT KIND OF CARE IT HAS HAD IN THE PAST.
I have a 98 blazer that makes similar sounds but it's pieces of the dust shield off the rear wheel assembly that got down inside the brake rotor. Only happens when the truck is going forward
