Question about 1998 Kia Sportage

2 Answers

Engaging 4x4 I have a 1998 Kia Sportage and I don't know how to engage the 4-wheel drive. I've had the car for two years and never needed it until today. I've tried to move the small shift lever and it won't move. What am I doing wrong?

This is older but i will still respond for future problem solvers. the kia can switch from 2hi to 4hi anywhere under ~40mph u only have to stop to switch into 4lo. so if your shifter doesn't move check the linkage under the kia it could be frozen from not being used

Press the break and put the car in to neutral. Now while holding the break down shift the nob to 4x4 then put the car in drive. you can also keep the car in drive and shift to 4x4 but you have to bring the car to a complete stop before doing so, and the break must be held down (like at a stop light)

When i engage four wheel drive from the lever in the car i only get traction on the rear wheels. Is there a diff lock i need to engage

It depends, look at the hubs on your front wheels? Is there a knob in the center of the wheels? If so, then turn this knob to the right and you will have engaged the 4 wheel drive? If you do this, however, make sure you engage the 4 wheel drive inside the truck (if your truck has a 4 wheel drive gear shifter).
Oh other Rangers you have a knob on the inside of the cab it should be somewhere on the dash. You can turn it to the right and this will engage the 4 wheel drive.
Finally, when you engage the 4WD make sure the engine is cut off so it doesn't mess up your transfer case.

I don't know how to get my 2001 kia sportage into four wheel drive

On small shift behinde gear lever there is 3 settings. H4 = 4 wheel drive high range, L4 = 4 wheel drive low range, h2 = 2 wheel drive high range. as soon as jou engage to 4 wheel drive a green light on the dash board will appear to indicate that the car is in 4 wheel drive. if not check fuse - check air pipes at front wheels. May need to replace the switch itself. Most new vehcile are all electronically engaged. Replace the switch. Cheap fix compared to going into the transfer case first.

Four wheel drive wont engage

I got ripped off by a dealer with a similar problem that came back two weeks later. $2.99 of vacuum hose later I fixed it myself. Check all the vacuum lines for rotted hoses before you fork out 3K and they are easy to do
