I would recommend just picking up the service manual as it will give you step by step with illustrations. There is no better resource for your auto repairs. I always purchase these for my vehicles one repair of this nature and the book pays for itself.

Should be easy enough to raise engine high enough to get sump off to replace pump without completly removing engine and if it doesnt come out, sump, should be enough clearance to get pump out etc.Have you turned engine over with out distributor to see if the wreck impact was enough to shear the distributor drive?Another thing that would guarantee its the pump itself has failed is to use old distributor with cam gear removed and hook it up to a drill and see if oil pressure is present.Good luck and merry xmas

I experienced twice an orange engine oil pressure warning light and after the car wont move. I switched off the car and after ten minutes it moved. what is the problem

While an electrical fault or a faulty switch could put the light on, it is such an important light it should never be ignored and the reason for it established immediately. As far as the owner is concerned that means lifting the bonnet and checking the oil level and adding more if the level is low. If it isn't low the car should be recovered to a repair shop. Driving further could be very expensive and very inconvenient...

If the oil pressure light has switched on because the oil pressure is low then continuing to drive will soon wreck the crankshaft bearings or cause crankshaft or camshaft seizure. Damage happens so quickly if the oil pressure is lost at motorway speeds the engine is likely to be severely damaged by the time the car is stopped.

I strongly suggest you have the reason for the light switching on established and repaired.

1990 5.8, 74000 miles well maintained. Oil preasure drops off

Why are you running 10 - 40 weight oil. You might want to rethink this. As the miles go up the ware on parts goes up. So I would recommend a 5 - 20 or 5 - 30 high mileage oil. If the oil pump is that new and working properly then this will help with the pressure.

The oil light came on whild driving my 1999 Lexus RX300 and the engine shut down. After pulling to the side of the road, I turned the igintion switch off and then on and the car started and I drove i

The oil warning light is telling you the oil pressure has dropped below 10psi which does not always mean the oil level is low.
When the oil pressure drops, the power for the fuel pump is cut for safety reasons. You would not want the fuel pump to keep going if you were in a wreck and the engine stopped but the key switch was still on.
It could be a faulty sensor, or you really could be loosing oil pressure.
If the light comes on again, you would need to have the pressure checked with a mechanical gauge.

91 plymouth sundance died, oil on ground, check engine on

If you feel like the engine is still ok, I would look at the oil pressure and check engine light issues.
On engines with fuel injection, the fuel pump is powered by the pump relay until the engine starts. Then the engine has to have oil pressure to keep the fuel pump powered.
Its a safety feature so if you are in a wreck the fuel pump does not keep running if the engine is off.
I would want to know why the oil pressure light is staying on and what the trouble codes are in the computer.

97 maxima starts and then sputters out. Should the fuel pump continuously pump or shut off if the car not running

The pump stops running if the engine dies. Cuts down on the risk of fire in a wreck. The computer has to see oil pressure or RPM to power the pump.

I have a 2003 passat, while driving , the check oiil light came on so I stopped and checked and it was full. upon proceeding just a few miles i heard a rattling noise, I stopped an listened and it sounded...

You have a broken oil pump. The light indicates loss of oil pressure. You have plenty of oil, but no oil pressure. Continued driving will shorten the life of engine dramtically or can wreck the engine completely in a short time. You need to take it to a mechanic asap, unless you plan on tackling it yourself. in which case you should re-post for help with that, or search Google for instructions.

Sorry, and good luck.

I have a 97 jeep cherokee country 4.0 L. and we were fixing it from a wreck it had. re-did the entire front axle and new brakes and tires. Now it seems to have low oil pressure and when we start it and...

sounds like the oil pump
install a gauge and measure pressure
do not rely on the dash gauge
most of the time they won't show you a problem until you have less than 5psi

Can i use synthetic oil in my 97 cobra?

of couse u can, but it's real benefit is long engine life and reduced thermal break down of the oil, if you plan to keep the car well past 100,000 miles use syn oil.

2001 Dodge Stratus Transmission Problem

COULD BE LOSS OF ALL TRASMISSION FLUID, BROKEN HOSE, BLOWN PUMP,BURNT TRANSMISSION RINGS( HOW DID THE TRANNY OIL SMELL?) BURNT TRANNY FLUID OR A COMBINATION OF ANY OF THE ABOVE. IF IT JUST QUIT, YOU PROBABLY HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT WILL REQUIRE A REBUILD OR A SALVAGE TRANSMISSION FROM A LOCAL WRECKING YARD. THE LATTER BEING THE CHEAPEST AND AT TIMES THE BETTER DEAL ALL AROUND, TIME WISE AND MONEY. VERSUS A REBUILD THAT REQUIRES NEW PARTS, BANDS, PUMP, SEALS AND ON AND ON PLUS HOURS OF LABOR TO FIX EQUALS ONE BIG BIG BILL!BEING A 2001 A TRANNY FROM A WRECKING YARD ISN'T GOING TO HAVE THAT MANY MILES ON IT EITHER SO YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND SOME PRETTY DECENT ONES. THAT'S THE ROUTE I'D GO, BUT YOU'RE FREE TO CHOOSE EITHER CHOICE. I DON'T ENDORSE OR CONDEMN EITHER ONE, JUST POINT OUT THE GOOG AND THE WEAK IN EACH FOR YOU TO DECIDE! GOOD LUCK!
