I have a 96 Ford Taurus GL (V6 3.0), with a trasmission problem.
When I have it in overdrive and take off, it works fine, shifts good and evything. But, when I stop it comes out of gear, then I put it back in neutral and back to overdrive and it is fine again until I stop, or I can down shift to regular drive(not overdrive) at about 20 or 30 mph and it will not mess up. However if I start off in regular drive, it will drive fine all day. Any ideas?

Sound a little like low fluid or plugged filter.Get a can of `Sea-Foam' T-R-ansmission treatment from Auto-Zone or somewhere and add it per directions and exercise the ****** immediatley per directions on the can. it works in many cases.I'd THEN drain and refill with new fluid. don-ohio

You might need to replace the valve body clip with the upgraded
(stronger) one. Ford had problems for a while with the clip breaking and
not allowing the tranny to shift into O/D. I had the no O/D problem, I
replaced the clip with the upgraded (stronger) one which fixed the
It is probable that you blew out the seals and will need your transmission repaired. You can try to slip a small hose down the dip stick tube and draw out the extra fluid, there is a slight chance that your transmission will work if you get the fluid level back down where it should be.
You may want to change the vehicle speed sensor first. Is your speedometer working? The shift solenoids are inside the side cover of the transmission and it's quite a job to get that cover off, you practically have to take the trans out of the car. Are you getting a "check engine" light there may be a code in the computer that will tell you what is going on. If one of those solenoids fail it should trigger a "check engine" light, the solenoids are usually pretty trouble free as a rule. I'm not sure on that transmission, but I think there are two shift solenoids, but there is also a "torque converter clutch solenoid". Also, if you can get it to a trany shop they can put a scan tool on your car and tell you exactly what's happening. Have you tried manually shifting the car? Pull it down into 1 then manually shift it up, see if it will shift that way.
Solenoid pack in trans. Position module,is just that. Wrong guess. What tran model do you have? You also have other sensors to consider but have to know the trans your working on and the computer and shift stratagy involved to solve this, even if your throwing parts at it.
