Yes. Turn the ignition switch to ON, do not engage the starter. Do this 3 times. On the third time leave the key in the ON position and start counting the number of times that the Check Engine Light flashes on and off. There will be a slightly longer pause when it is flashing out the next digit. Then go to http://autorepair.about.com/library/ts/obd-i/bl-dtcs-75a.htm and see what your code(s) mean.

How do I get the obd1 codes from my 95 olds 98 without a scanner?

If your ALDL connector is a 16 pin (looks like an OBD2) but your GM vehicle is 95 or 94 then the only way to scan the codes is with a scanner. http://reddevilriver.com/aldl.html

Check codes without scanner

Most any auto parts store will check for codes for free in hopes of selling you some parts. Only Chrysler products let you check without a scanner or code reader on 95 and newer models.

Cannot locate data link connector

If you're looking for the OBD 2 port for your scanner - there isn't one. OBD 2 scanners / code readers only work/are used by 1996 and newer vehicles. I also have a 95 JGC and I have to resort to the "lamp flash" method to get the trouble codes from the ECU.
