Also, I just wanted to let you know a vacum leak will effect the way the transmission works so this should be the first thing you check.

Sounds like it could really be a vacum leak. You can take water in a spray bottle or a can of either and spray around your vacum hoses. If you hear the engine either idle up or idle down you know you've found your problem. Also, is your check engine light on?

sounds like a catalytic converter - runs good but lacks power - the back pressure keeps the engine from being able to accelerate under load - good luck :O)

Engine raced with sudden loss of power climbing hill

Sounds like the transmission went south on you..(surge and power loss was the trans not sending power to the wheels, allowing the engine to freewheel as the cruise applied more power to try and maintain speed).Depending upon how high the rpm's went when it let go, it may have damaged the engine, but that remains to be determined...Your mechanic will likely concentrate on that before putting a transmission on a wounded engine. The one grain of hope in what you said is that it remained running while you had the a/c on waiting for a tow. Good Luck!!

It sounds like your vehicle needs a major tune-up. Try putting in some fuel injector cleaner gas additive and a new air intake filter.
